Unpopular opinion: I’m not super fond of the original “Hush Little Baby” lullaby. It’s ok, but promising a baby a bunch of gifts that aren’t really meant for kids irks me. It came on the kids’ playlist this morning, and in a fit of inspiration, fueled by caffeine, I decided to write my own. In the hustle and bustle of taking care of children and running a household, it’s easy to forget to do things just for the enjoyment of it. This was fun, and I suggest you pick up a pen and write your own version just because; if you do, I’d love to read it!
Hush, little baby, don’t say a word,
Mama’s gonna show you a humming bird,
and if that hummingbird flits away,
Mama’s gonna show you how horses neigh,
and when those horses go back home,
Mama’s gonna give you some honeycomb,
and when that honeycomb’s all gone,
Mama’s gonna show you a swimming swan,
and when that swimming swan gets dry,
Mama’s gonna show you the evening sky,
and when the evening sun has set,
you’ll still be the sweetest baby I’ve met.
Disclaimer/Reality Check: I have no sense of rhythm and had to use a rhyming website to help make this. This column will be about motherhood, parenting, and homemaking for the most part. It might be about alternatives to screen time or homemade play dough one week and a sanity saving laundry routine the next. Most importantly, I don’t ever want this column to make another mama think she’s not doing enough. If you’re reading this, I want you to know that you are, you’re doing great, keep it up. Sing it with me: no-one is doing it allllll!
