The Pahrump Valley High School softball team delivered a strong all-around performance on their home field Tuesday, March 31, building an early lead and holding steady late to secure an 8-6 win over the Legacy Longhorns.
From the first inning, the Trojans set the tone behind a dominant performance in the circle from Jaycie Hayes. Hayes struck out the side in the top of the first, showcasing control and power that would carry throughout the game.
Pahrump Valley wasted no time answering offensively in the bottom half. Aspen Middaugh and Riley Saldaña sparked the inning with back-to-back bunt singles, immediately putting pressure on the Longhorns’ defense. After Hayes drew a walk to load the bases, Madison Rodriguez followed with another walk to bring in the game’s first run. Saldaña later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Trojans a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Trojans’ defense continued to shine in the second inning as Hayes added three more strikeouts, keeping Legacy off balance. Although Pahrump Valley was unable to add to its lead in the bottom of the inning, Middaugh recorded another hit to keep the offense active.
In the third, Hayes continued her impressive outing with three more strikeouts, working around a pair of walks to strand runners. The Trojans capitalized again in the bottom half, using aggressive baserunning and timely execution. Hayes singled to start the inning, and after a walk to Evalenne Armendariz, Madison Rodriguez reached on an error that allowed Hayes to score. A sacrifice fly from Mariah Gray brought in another run, extending the lead to 4-0.

Pahrump Valley’s defense remained sharp in the fourth inning, highlighted by more strikeouts from Hayes and clean fielding behind her. Offensively, the Trojans loaded the bases with patience at the plate, drawing multiple walks, but were unable to push another run across.
Legacy broke through in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a couple of baserunners and a well-placed hit to score their first run. However, the Trojans responded immediately in the bottom half with their biggest inning of the game.
After Jaelyn Rodriguez reached on an error and Mariah Gray walked, Middaugh delivered a clutch two-run double to center field, scoring both runners. Saldaña kept the momentum going by reaching on an error, and Hayes followed with a two-run double to left field, driving in Middaugh and Saldaña to push the lead to 8-1.

Hayes and the Trojans’ defense continued to handle business in the sixth inning, limiting Legacy to just one hit and stranding the runner with a pair of strikeouts and solid defensive plays.
The Longhorns mounted a late push in the seventh, capitalizing on walks and a series of hits to score five runs and cut into the deficit. Despite the rally, Hayes remained composed in the circle, recording two key strikeouts to close out the game and secure the win.
Middaugh led the offense with multiple hits, including a key double, while Hayes contributed both in the circle and at the plate with a strong all-around performance. Saldaña and Rodriguez also played key roles in generating offense and applying pressure on the bases.
With the win, the Trojans showed both their ability to build early momentum and their resilience in finishing games, continuing to develop as a well-rounded team as the season progresses.
