The Pahrump Valley Little League 8-10 All-Star team, the Tailgaters, saw an unforgettable postseason come to a close Friday night, July 17th, finishing as Division 4 tournament runners-up after falling 16-6 to Summerlin South in the championship game.
While the final score did not end the way Pahrump had hoped, it did little to overshadow what was a landmark tournament for the program. The Tailgaters entered the championship undefeated after three consecutive victories, becoming the first 8-10 All-Star team in Pahrump Valley Little League history to win a game in the District 4 tournament. They didn’t stop there, winning three straight to reach the championship and ultimately bringing home the league’s highest-ever finish in the division.
Because of Little League’s unique tournament format, the championship is a winner-take-all contest. Although the Tailgaters entered from the winner’s bracket without a loss, there was no “if” game, meaning their first defeat of the tournament also brought their postseason run to an end.
Even facing an early deficit against a talented South squad, the Tailgaters refused to quit, battling until the final out and showing the determination that had carried them through the tournament.
South came out swinging in the top of the first inning, stringing together several hits to build a 5-0 lead before Pahrump could record the third out. Isaiah Parry got the start on the mound before Javier Nogales came on in relief to settle things down, recording a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Pahrump immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning.
After Javier Nogales was retired to open the frame, Sage O’Neal worked a walk before Liam Olson reached on an error. Isaiah Banuelos then delivered an RBI single to right field, bringing Parry home with the Tailgaters’ first run of the night and trimming the deficit to 5-1.
South added two more runs in the second inning to stretch its advantage to 7-1, but Nogales continued to pitch well after entering in relief, striking out four batters over the next three innings while limiting further damage.
The Tailgaters again found a way to answer.
Sebastian “Bash” Tillery and Daniel Loveless each drew walks before Nolan Willinsky reached on a fielder’s choice. During Paxton Larsen’s at-bat, Tillery stole home, cutting the deficit to 7-2 despite the inning ending moments later.
The biggest moment of the game came in the bottom of the third, when Pahrump mounted a comeback that briefly put all the momentum on its side.
Raylan Calleros was retired to begin the inning, but the offense came alive as Nogales, O’Neal and Parry delivered three consecutive singles to load the bases. Olson followed with an RBI groundout that scored Nogales before O’Neal crossed the plate on a passed ball. Banuelos then worked a walk, and Oliver Trudeau lined a two-run single to right field, driving in both Banuelos and Parry to cap a four-run, two-out rally that pulled the Tailgaters within a single run at 7-6.
The defense backed the rally in the fourth. Nogales struck out two more batters and worked around a pair of baserunners to keep South off the scoreboard, giving Pahrump another chance to complete the comeback.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wolfe Willinsky singled and Nolan Willinsky reached on an error, putting runners in scoring position, but South escaped the threat to preserve its one-run lead.
South finally created some separation in the fifth, capitalizing on a handful of hits and defensive miscues to score four runs and extend its lead to 11-6. Isaiah Banuelos entered to pitch late in the inning and recorded consecutive strikeouts to limit further damage.
The visitors added five more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach, though Banuelos battled through the inning and recorded the final out himself.
Needing one last rally in the bottom of the sixth, Olson opened with a single and Banuelos followed with a walk to give Pahrump life. Tillery also worked a walk to load the bases with one out, but South was able to record the final two strikeouts to secure the championship.
Although the championship trophy slipped away, the Tailgaters’ postseason will be remembered as one of the most successful in Pahrump Valley Little League history. After years of searching for a breakthrough, this group not only earned the league’s first-ever Division 4 tournament victory at the 8-10 level, but followed it with two more wins, reached the championship game undefeated and finished second in the tournament.
For a team that never stopped believing—even after falling behind early in the title game—the runner-up finish stands as a remarkable accomplishment and a milestone that future Pahrump All Star teams will look to build upon.
