Stan Hyt Shares Background, Experience and Vision in Nye County Sheriff Race

As early voting approaches in Nye County, Stan Hyt is stepping forward as a candidate for Sheriff, offering a perspective shaped by decades in law enforcement and a desire to build stronger connections between deputies and the communities they serve.

Hyt brings more than 30 years of experience with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he worked as both an officer and supervisor. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from San Diego State University. While he is relatively new to Pahrump—having lived in the community for about three months—his ties to Nevada stretch back more than 48 years.

“I came here by request from concerned Sheriff’s deputies and community officials that felt I would be a good fit to solving some of the issues in the Sheriff’s Office,” Hyt said, explaining what led him to make Pahrump his home.

Outside of campaigning, Hyt describes his day-to-day life as simple and community-oriented. He enjoys cooking, working out at his home gym, riding his bike around the neighborhood and staying connected with friends, often winding down by watching a sporting event.

When reflecting on what he is most proud of, Hyt points first to his family, especially his two grandsons. Professionally, he points to his three-decade career in law enforcement as a significant achievement—one that continues to shape his approach to leadership.

His decision to run for sheriff, he said, was not something he initially planned, but rather something encouraged by members of the local community.

“Personal requests from members of the Pahrump community prompted me to run for the Office of Sheriff of Nye County,” he said.

Though new to Pahrump, Hyt said he hopes residents understand the level of commitment he brings to the role and to the community as a whole.

“I’m new to this community but I’m passionate to make things better here in Nye County,” he said, adding that his enthusiasm for serving the area may come as a surprise to some.

Hyt said his personal values play a central role in how he approaches decisions, emphasizing accountability and a sense of service in both his personal and professional life.

Looking ahead, he defines success as building trust—both within the Sheriff’s Office and throughout the community. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring adequate deputy coverage across Nye County and improving morale within the department.

“Success for me would be a community that trusts its deputies, deputies that trust their leadership, deputy coverage for the entire Nye County, improved morale and resources to equip our deputies efficiently,” he said.

He also sees opportunities to strengthen leadership strategies and make thoughtful use of existing resources, with a focus on maintaining transparency and confidence in how the department operates.

If elected, Hyt said he hopes his impact would be reflected in both internal improvements and broader community outcomes.

“At the end of my term I hope that people recognize improved morale within the Sheriff’s Office, more community respect for the work of their deputies, reduced crime, less drugs in our community, and less homelessness,” he said.

Beyond his candidacy, Hyt describes himself as someone who values connection and service in everyday life. Whether cooking a meal for others, helping someone in need or simply spending time socializing at local events, he said those moments are what bring him the most fulfillment.

“I have a genuine love for people,” he said. “I love serving people… sitting around socializing and sharing local events is very relaxing to me.”

As the race continues, Hyt’s campaign centers on experience, community trust and a commitment to strengthening both the Sheriff’s Office and its relationship with the people it serves.
