For Devon Montgomery, a proud member of Pahrump Valley High School’s Class of 2014, high school wasn’t just about academics—it was a launchpad for a life defined by passion, perseverance, and personal growth. Today, as the Director of Sprints and Hurdles at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and a leading personal trainer at Burn Boot Camp, Montgomery continues to chase excellence in everything he does—just as he did on the track back in Pahrump.
Devon’s time at PVHS was filled with memorable moments that extended beyond the classroom. Among his favorite high school experiences were the school dances, which gave him the chance to relax, have fun, and bond with friends. Another major highlight was the time he spent in the ROTC room, building friendships and learning life skills with the sergeant who ran the program. The camaraderie and mentorship found there made a lasting impression on him.
But it was on the track where Devon made his biggest mark. Though he started his hurdling career later than most—in his junior year—he quickly rose to the top, capturing two state championships in the 110-meter high hurdles before graduating. These victories weren’t just wins on the scoreboard; they marked the beginning of what would become a lifelong dedication to athletics and human performance. In the classroom, Devon thrived as well, particularly enjoying his anatomy and physiology course with Mr. Nygaard, which would later spark his academic interest in the human body and movement.
Though Devon now lives halfway across the country, he still keeps an eye on PVHS athletics, especially during track season. “I search the track and field results during the season mostly,” he said. While his direct connection to the school has lessened over time, social media helps him stay in touch with high school friends and the Pahrump community that helped shape him.
After graduating from PVHS, Devon headed to Southern Utah University, originally intending to study culinary arts. When that program wasn’t available, he pivoted to biology and later to kinesiology, driven by his natural curiosity about the human body. Eventually, he landed in the Physical Education Teaching and Coaching program, a path that aligned perfectly with his evolving athletic goals and desire to help others reach their full potential.

Devon’s collegiate athletic career was nothing short of remarkable. Competing in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, he qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships every year he was eligible. He finished college with personal bests of 14.06 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 51.2 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. Even after college, Devon didn’t slow down—literally. Training on his own, he managed to cut his 110-meter hurdles time to an impressive 13.70 seconds. “My career has started late,” he acknowledged, “but it’s grown into a successful career and I’m excited to keep it going!”

Now settled in La Crosse, Devon’s days are filled with an intense and carefully managed schedule. His typical day begins at 3 a.m., followed by a 4 a.m. start at Burn Boot Camp, where he coaches clients until 11 a.m. After a short break, he heads to Viterbo University from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and then leads practices from 3:45 to 6 p.m. By 6:15, he’s home, in bed by 8:30, and ready to do it all over again the next day. He shares his home with his two brothers and juggles all his professional responsibilities without pets or children—though he does make time for watching anime and reading comics, which provide a welcome escape from his physically demanding career.
Despite the demanding nature of his work, Devon thrives on helping others improve their lives, whether they’re college athletes chasing personal records or adults striving to live healthier lifestyles. He’s especially proud that one of his student athletes at Viterbo has won the university’s Athlete of the Year award each year since he began coaching. In the realm of personal training, Devon has carved out a reputation for excellence, leading his region in nutrition coaching and holding certifications in both personal training and nutrition.
Devon credits his parents as the greatest influences on his life and career. Their support and example helped shape the values he carries with him today: consistency, integrity, and always striving to be the best version of himself. He’s also quick to recognize that his journey hasn’t been without challenges. Balancing multiple roles—as a fitness instructor, university coach, personal trainer, and competitive athlete—is no easy feat. But he meets every obstacle with determination and grace, reminding himself to keep communication lines open, never let things end unnecessarily, and always give his best effort.
Devon also finds time to give back to his community. He volunteers regularly at local elementary schools—four so far—sharing his knowledge, enthusiasm, and example with younger generations. His commitment to mentoring and uplifting others is just one more way he extends his passion beyond the track and into everyday life.
Looking ahead, Devon has set his sights on some ambitious goals. He hopes to one day lead a sports performance facility as a director, combining all his experience and passion into a central hub for athlete development. He’s also currently training to qualify for the USATF Championships—proof that his journey as an athlete is far from over. In the meantime, he’s gearing up for another exciting year at Viterbo, leading the sprints, hurdles, and strength and conditioning programs.

Devon’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, adaptability, and passion. From school dances in the PVHS gym to championship-level races and national coaching opportunities, his path has been shaped by resilience, curiosity, and a desire to bring out the best in himself and others. As he continues to push boundaries and inspire those around him, there’s no doubt that the best is yet to come.
