Part 1: Breathe First
In today’s fast-paced world, self-care is more than just a luxury—it’s a necessity. With overflowing to-do lists, growing responsibilities, and constant connectivity, we often neglect the one person who keeps it all together: ourselves.
You’ve likely heard the phrase, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” It’s repeated often, yet we seldom pause long enough to consider what it really means. The image that brought it home for me was one I encountered midair—literally.
I was on a flight with my children, half-listening to the usual pre-flight safety instructions when that familiar line came over the intercom:
“In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will drop from above. Place your own mask on before assisting others.”
Instantly, my inner voice protested. What kind of mother would I be if I put the mask on myself before my children? My instinct is to protect them first, always. But the truth is, by making sure I could breathe—alert, steady, and conscious—I would actually be better equipped to care for them. I would be giving from strength, not from struggle.
This principle became painfully real during a recent well-check appointment. The doctor instructed me as usual: “Breathe normal. Take a deep breath. Let it out.”
A routine moment, but this time it was different. My lungs, it turned out, were not functioning as they should. They were retaining air, full of trapped pockets. Ironically, the very thing meant to keep me alive—oxygen—was suffocating me.
In that moment, I learned a powerful truth: we can’t even begin the journey of self-care until we learn to breathe—intentionally, deeply, and regularly.
So let’s do it now:
1-2-3—inhale through your nose.
1-2-3—exhale through your mouth.
Feel that? That’s life meeting you where you are.
Breathing is the beginning. It’s how we reconnect with our bodies. It’s how we pause, reset, and return to ourselves. In this series, we’ll explore what it means to put on your “oxygen mask” in everyday life. Each part will offer a practical, heart-centered approach to caring for yourself—mind, body, and soul.
