The Pahrump Valley High School softball team closed out Regional Tournament play on Saturday, May 9 in Boulder City with a pair of hard-fought games against Virgin Valley, showing flashes of offensive power and resilience despite falling short in both matchups.
Game 1
Virgin Valley struck first in the top of the opening inning, capitalizing on an early error before a sacrifice fly brought in the game’s first run. In the circle for the Trojans, Evalenne Armendariz settled in quickly, inducing a pair of pop outs to limit further damage.
Pahrump had an early opportunity in the bottom half after Aspen Middaugh reached on a bunt and later stole second, but Virgin Valley pitcher Kamzlee Dalton worked out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
Defensively, the Trojans navigated a clean second inning behind Armendariz, highlighted by a well-executed groundout from Mariah Gray to Jaelyn Rodriguez. Offensively, Gray provided a spark in the bottom half with a hard-hit single, though the Trojans were unable to bring her home.
The Bulldogs created separation in the third inning, stringing together hits and taking advantage of defensive miscues. Despite the pressure, Armendariz recorded a key strikeout to slow the momentum.
Pahrump responded in a big way in the bottom of the third. After Sadie Freeman reached and Middaugh added a bunt single, Jaycie Hayes delivered another base hit to load the bases. Armendariz then ignited the offense with a towering three-run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 6-4 and shifting momentum back toward the Trojans.

Defensively, the Trojans tightened up in the fourth inning. Middaugh made a heads-up play to catch a runner attempting to steal home, and the outfield, including Riley Saldaña, tracked down key fly balls to end the threat.
Virgin Valley extended its lead again in the fifth inning, capitalizing on timely hits, including a bases-clearing double. Still, Armendariz continued to battle in the circle, finishing innings with composure despite the pressure.
Pahrump showed fight in the bottom of the fifth. Armendariz led off with a single, and Gray followed with a play that resulted in runs scoring after defensive errors. Madison Rodriguez and Jaelyn Rodriguez each contributed base hits, while Olivia Veloz added a bunt single to keep the rally alive as the Trojans cut the deficit to 11-6.
Armendariz continued pitching into the late innings, adding another strikeout in the sixth and working through traffic with the help of her defense. Middaugh and Natalie Soto made key plays in the field to close out innings.
In the final frame, Virgin Valley added one more run on a solo home run. Pahrump attempted a late push, with Jaelyn Rodriguez drawing a walk, but the rally fell short as the Trojans dropped the game 12-6.
Game 2
In the second game, Pahrump came out strong, setting the tone early. Middaugh worked a leadoff walk, and Saldaña was hit by a pitch to put two on. Hayes followed with a single, loading the bases before Armendariz grounded out to bring in the first run. Moments later, Gray delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the circle, Hayes took over pitching duties and quickly found her rhythm. After surrendering a two-run home run in the first inning that tied the game, she responded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.
The Trojans threatened again in the second, with Jaelyn Rodriguez reaching on a single and advancing to third, but the inning ended before Pahrump could capitalize.

Virgin Valley pushed ahead in the bottom of the second, using a mix of bunts, walks, and defensive miscues to plate two runs. Hayes limited further damage with a key infield fly and a pop out to close the inning.
Pahrump answered in the third. Hayes delivered a double to center, and Armendariz followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit. Aggressive baserunning paid off moments later, as Hayes scored on a steal of home to tie the game at 4-4.
Hayes continued to dominate in the circle, striking out multiple batters in both the third and sixth innings. Her command and composure helped keep the Trojans within reach throughout the middle frames.
Defensively, the Trojans showed improvement, with clean innings in the fifth and sixth. Middaugh anchored the infield, while Veloz and Rodriguez combined for several routine but crucial outs.

Pahrump had chances late, including a bases-loaded situation in the sixth after walks and hit batters, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.
In the seventh, Gray and Madison Rodriguez each delivered singles to spark a final rally, but Virgin Valley escaped the inning with a strikeout to maintain the tie.
In the bottom half, Virgin Valley managed to load the bases and score the winning run on a fielder’s choice, ending the game 5-4.
Despite the outcome, the Trojans showed resilience and flashes of their offensive potential throughout both games, particularly with key contributions from Armendariz, Hayes, Middaugh, and Gray.
Head Coach Brian Hayes acknowledged the challenges while remaining focused on the bigger picture.
“Regionals turned from a cakewalk to a tough loss,” Hayes said. “Honestly, we have been playing so well it was good for us to get punched in the mouth a bit. Our defense didn’t show up and we lacked the mental toughness needed to overcome our mistakes. Quite a few of our girls had their defensive miscues creep into their at-bats. We could see it and so could Virgin Valley. We look at it as a wake-up call and are excited to see how these girls will respond.”
With the postseason still ahead, the Trojans will look to regroup, sharpen their defense, and carry the lessons learned into the next stage of competition.
