The Pahrump Valley High School softball team kicked off their season at the Needles Tournament in Needles, California, from February 27 through March 1. Facing tough competition, the Trojans played their first two games against Fernley High School and Palo Verde Valley, battling through challenges on both offense and defense.
PVHS vs. Fernley Vaqueros
In their opening matchup against Fernley, the Trojans struggled to find their offensive rhythm, ultimately falling 7-0. The game started with promise, as five Trojans stepped up to the plate in the first inning, but only two reached base before the inning ended. Fernley, however, capitalized early, putting two runs on the board to take the lead.
The second inning saw the Vaqueros extend their lead, as the Trojans were retired in order with three consecutive outs. Fernley added two more runs, making it 4-0 after two innings. The Trojans had an opportunity in the third inning, loading the bases with three runners, but were unable to bring anyone home. Meanwhile, Fernley remained steady, scoring three more runs to secure their 7-0 victory. Solid pitching and strong fielding by the Vaqueros proved to be the difference-maker in the game.
PVHS vs. Palo Verde Valley Yellow Jackets
Later that day, the Trojans returned to the field to take on Palo Verde Valley in a more competitive contest. The game was a back-and-forth battle that ended with a 5-3 loss for the Trojans.
Palo Verde struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans responded quickly. Autumn Colon led off with a walk and then stole second base, putting herself in scoring position. Evalenne Armendariz stepped up with a double, driving in Colon to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Danika Cox-Hosino allowed Armendariz to score, giving PVHS a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
The Yellow Jackets evened the score in the second inning with another run, while their defense kept the Trojans from reaching base. In the third inning, Palo Verde pulled ahead 3-2 as the Trojans left two runners stranded, missing an opportunity to tie the game.
The fourth inning showcased strong defensive play from PVHS, retiring the Yellow Jackets in order. However, the Yellow Jackets’ pitching remained dominant, keeping the Trojans from adding to their score. In the fifth inning, Palo Verde widened the gap with two more runs, bringing their lead to 5-2. The Trojans fought back in the bottom of the inning, as an error at shortstop allowed Colon to reach base again. Armendariz followed with another double, moving Colon into scoring position. A sacrifice grounder allowed Colon to score, but the Yellow Jackets’ defense shut down the rally, securing the 5-3 victory.
Despite the two losses, the Trojans remain optimistic about the rest of the tournament and the season ahead. The team showcased resilience and determination, setting a foundation for future growth. With lessons learned from these early games, the Trojans are eager to continue competing and improving as the season unfolds.
