RCMS Sharks Battle to Overtime in Hard-Fought Match Against Eureka Vandals

The Rosemary Clarke Middle School (RCMS) Sharks football team faced off against the Eureka Vandals on Friday, September 20, in a hard-fought game on a neutral field in Tonopah. Despite being physically outmatched early on, the Sharks displayed resilience, ultimately forcing the game into overtime before falling just short in a dramatic conclusion. The final score was 42-36 in favor of Eureka, but the Sharks’ valiant effort left an indelible mark on the game.

Head Coach Jeff Corbett acknowledged the challenge his team faced from the outset. “We were outmatched physically,” Corbett said. “Their defense dominated the line, and we couldn’t stop them running up the middle.” Despite the rough start, the Sharks refused to back down. Coach Corbett and his team made some crucial second-half adjustments that turned the tide of the game.

“We made amazing second-half adjustments,” Corbett explained. “We moved some players around on defense, and we completely changed the script on offense.” The Sharks switched to a more dynamic offensive setup, spreading the field with four wide receivers and relying on quick, short passes. This shift took Eureka’s powerful defensive line out of the equation and allowed the Sharks to claw their way back into the game, tying it 36-36 at the end of regulation.

With the momentum on their side, the Sharks headed into overtime. However, a series of miscommunications clouded the game’s closing moments. “We were supposed to go to Eureka, and there was a whole heap of miscommunication,” Corbett said. “There were no refs, no scoreboard, no chain crew, no water… nothing! We pulled parents to help with everything.”

Despite these setbacks, the Sharks had a chance in overtime but were intercepted, giving Eureka the advantage. “In the first overtime, we stopped them, and Stetson got picked off. Instead of Eureka going back to their 20 after the interception, they started at our 30. They had the advantage and scored.”

Despite the unfortunate ending, Coach Corbett is contesting the result, stating, “It wasn’t played correctly, and it should be a tie.”

While the game ended in controversy, the Sharks’ ability to adapt and fight back in the second half was a testament to their grit and determination. They displayed a true fighting spirit, and despite the unusual circumstances, the team remains focused on their growth and upcoming challenges.
