Although she’s only been in the position for a week, Ms. Mary Mainio is already making an impression as the new Dean of Students at Pahrump Valley High School. With a long and diverse background in education, a passion for student growth, and a deep respect for community involvement, Mainio is excited to step into her new role and begin building meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families.
Mainio’s journey to PVHS began with a strong foundation rooted in family. “I come from a family of educators,” she said. “When I went to college, I knew I wanted to work with students, but not necessarily as a classroom teacher.” She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Washington State University and launched her career in youth programming, overseeing Before and After School Programs and Child Care Centers in the greater Tacoma area.
That early work eventually led to a position as Director of Early Head Start and Head Start at Green River Community College. It was a pivotal moment that pushed Mainio to pursue her Master’s degree in School Counseling—a decision that would ultimately shape the next chapter of her professional life. After ten years as a school counselor, she returned to her alma mater in that same role. There, a superintendent encouraged her to consider administration, and Mainio followed that advice, earning her administration certification from St. Martin University while serving as Dean of Students. She later became Assistant Principal for three years before accepting the Dean of Students position at PVHS.
“I am excited to be a part of this amazing team,” she said of her move to Pahrump. “This year, my goal is to get to know the students and the community, and build successful relationships and connections within the school.”
As Dean of Students, Mainio is focused on helping young people understand the real-world applications of their education—something she found especially rewarding as a counselor and continues to prioritize in administration. “One of my favorite things was seeing the connection students made between what they were learning in high school and how they could apply it to their lives outside of school,” she said. “Even as an administrator, you can still help them make those same connections that will help them grow and become successful, productive citizens.”
Each day in her role brings something new—and that’s part of what she enjoys most. “No day is the same,” she noted. “There are so many unique challenges, nuances, and successes. I enjoy watching students grow and meet their potential.” While the job can be demanding, especially when it comes to balancing student engagement with non-student-related responsibilities, Mainio said effective time management is key.
Equally important to her is building strong connections with families and the community. “Parent and community involvement is vital to the success of students,” she said. “We need parents as partners in their student’s educational journey, and both students and parents need to feel heard and understood.” Mainio also believes community members can offer essential insights into the real-world skills students need to succeed after graduation, making them valuable allies in the school’s mission.
While she’s still settling into life in Pahrump, Mainio is looking forward to all the area has to offer. “I just moved here, so I’m not sure what that looks like quite yet, but I’m excited to go hiking and explore the beauty this part of the country has to offer.” Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her children, participating in sports like recreational softball, reading, and walking her dogs.

Above all, Mainio wants the PVHS community to know that she is here to support them. “I love working with students—it’s my passion—and my door is always open to students and families,” she said. “I’m excited to be here and can’t wait to see what this year brings.”
With a wealth of experience, a student-centered philosophy, and an open heart, Mary Mainio is ready to help lead Pahrump Valley High School into a successful new chapter.
