The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans softball team delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Mater East Knights 14-1 on Wednesday, March 5, despite wet and slippery conditions that challenged both teams.
The Trojans overcame early defensive struggles in the first inning, with the rain contributing to some errors, but they held strong to keep the Knights scoreless. Pahrump wasted no time making an impact at the plate. Leading off, Autumn Colon smashed a triple deep to right field, setting the tone for the game. Riley Saldaña followed up with a powerful home run to left-center, quickly putting the Trojans ahead 2-0. After a walk to Evalenne Armendariz and a groundout by Sunday Colon, Danika Cox-Hosino reached base on a walk. Mariah Gray then stepped up with a solid double to right field, bringing Cox-Hosino home. A flyout ended the inning, but the Trojans had already built a 3-0 lead.

The Knights struggled to gain any offensive momentum against the Trojans’ defense. In the top of the second, Mater East went three up, three down, with Madison Rodriguez making a key catch on a high pop at the plate. The bottom of the inning saw the Trojans making contact, but Mater East’s defense held firm, keeping Pahrump from adding to their lead despite several base runners.

In the top of the third, Pahrump’s defense continued to shine, shutting down the Knights with key outs, including a well-fielded grounder by Autumn Colon. Cox-Hosino led off the bottom of the third with a single and quickly stole second base. Rodriguez followed with an RBI single, bringing Cox-Hosino home. Rodriguez then advanced to second on a throw to the plate. Ava Chiancone kept the momentum going with a double to short center, scoring Rodriguez. The Trojans ended the inning up 5-0.

The top of the fourth saw the Knights finally break through. A combination of a walk, a hit batter, and a well-placed single led to their lone run of the game. The Trojans, however, shut them down, leaving three runners stranded. Pahrump responded with an explosive bottom of the fourth, sending their lineup through the order and then some. Despite a strikeout to start the inning, Armendariz got things rolling with a solid double. Sunday Colon followed with another double, bringing a run home. Cox-Hosino reached first on a walk, and Gray was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a flyout, Chiancone was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run.

The floodgates opened from there. Freeman hit a single to score another, and Autumn Colon ripped a double to drive in yet another runner. Saldaña kept the momentum going with a two-RBI single, followed by another double from Armendariz. Sunday Colon capped off the inning with her second double of the frame, bringing in one final run before the Knights could record the third out. By the end of the inning, the Trojans had piled on nine runs, stretching their lead to 14-1.

The top of the fifth saw the Knights putting forth a determined effort to keep their hopes alive. They managed to get runners on base, but the Trojans’ defense held firm, stranding three runners and securing the 14-1 victory after four and a half innings. Despite the rainy conditions, the Trojans displayed resilience and offensive firepower, making a clear statement on their home field. With strong pitching, timely hitting, and solid defensive plays, Pahrump Valley proved they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
