The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans varsity girls’ basketball team faced a challenging game against the Boulder City Eagles, falling 47-37 in a matchup defined by intense defensive pressure and crucial foul trouble. The Eagles’ relentless full-court press set the tone early, and while the Trojans fought hard to keep the game within reach, they were unable to overcome key mistakes and missed opportunities.

The game started with Boulder City setting an intense tone that put the Trojans on the defensive from the beginning. The Trojans managed to open the scoring with a two-point basket by Ryleigh Denton a few minutes into the first quarter, but the Eagles quickly tied it and gained momentum. By the end of the quarter, Pahrump trailed 12-4, struggling to break through Boulder City’s aggressive defense.

In the second quarter, the Trojans found brief sparks of momentum. Denton made a technical foul shot at 7:11, and Riley Saldana followed up with a basket on an inbound play to narrow the gap to 12-7. A three-pointer by Denton from the left wing brought Pahrump within two points, trailing 12-10. However, turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Boulder City to rebuild their lead. By halftime, the Trojans were down 24-16.

The third quarter saw Pahrump fighting to close the gap, with Saldana scoring six of her team-high points in the paint and from the free-throw line. Nala Dalton contributed a jump shot from the top of the paint, and Denton added a critical basket from underneath. However, the team’s momentum was hindered by foul trouble. Saldana picked up her fourth foul midway through the quarter and fouled out shortly after, leaving the Trojans without one of their key players. By the end of the third, Pahrump was still in the hunt, trailing 38-32.

In the final quarter, the Trojans showed determination to stage a comeback. Denton opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the right corner, bringing the team within three points at 38-35. Savannah Thompson added a basket underneath to make it 40-37. However, Boulder City capitalized on turnovers and extended their lead as the clock wound down. Despite late-game free throw opportunities for Trinity French and Sydney Crotty, the Trojans couldn’t recover, ultimately losing 47-37.

Head Coach Bob Hopkins expressed his frustration after the game, emphasizing the team’s need to improve defensively. The Trojans’ struggle to contain Boulder City’s offense and manage their own fouls proved costly in a game where opportunities to seize control slipped away.

The Trojans were led by Ryleigh Denton, who displayed her scoring prowess throughout the game. Saldana’s efforts in the paint and Dalton’s timely shot-making also stood out. The Trojans will look to bounce back in their next game which will be at home on Friday, January 10th at 5p.m. in the main gym.
