The Pahrump Valley High School baseball team wasted no time making a statement on Saturday, April 11, jumping out to a commanding early lead against Desert Oasis at Sierra Vista High School in a game that showcased both explosive offense and resilience.
Pahrump Valley set the tone immediately in the top of the first, putting together one of their most productive innings of the season. Dominic Chiancone started things off with a leadoff walk, and CJ Nelson followed with a base hit to put two on. After Dominik Wilson drew a walk to load the bases, Vinny Whitney lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in the game’s first run.
The Trojans kept the pressure on as Jack Walker and Paul Walker each worked walks to force in another run. Jacob Selbach delivered a key RBI single, followed by another run-scoring hit from Sammy Mendoza. Leland Delgado reached on an error to extend the inning, and Chiancone came through again with an RBI single.

Nelson added to his strong start with another RBI knock, and after Wilson was hit by a pitch and Whitney walked, the Trojans continued to capitalize. Paul Walker delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a bases-clearing double, and Selbach capped the rally with another RBI double. By the time the dust settled, Pahrump Valley had erupted for a 13-0 lead before recording the final out.

On the defensive side, Ben Cimperman got the start on the mound for the Trojans. He worked through the bottom of the first with a mix of strikeouts and composure, navigating a bases-loaded situation where a walk forced in one run. Cimperman limited the damage there, allowing just that single run before the defense stepped in to end the inning.

Desert Oasis showed some life in the second, connecting on a solo home run, but the Trojans defense responded well. Cimperman struck out another batter, and strong fielding from Leland Delgado and Jacob Selbach helped keep the damage minimal.
The third inning brought more momentum for the home team, as Desert Oasis added a pair of runs, including another home run. Still, the Trojans defense came up with a key double play, started by Sammy Mendoza at third, to stop the rally and maintain control.
After a quiet couple of innings offensively, Pahrump Valley looked to reset in the fourth, but a double play cut the inning short. Meanwhile, Desert Oasis continued to chip away, taking advantage of hits and a few defensive miscues to close the gap.

Tony Whitney took over on the mound in the fourth inning, working through a challenging stretch as the Diamondbacks strung together hits and capitalized on opportunities. Despite the surge, the Trojans continued to battle, with key defensive plays limiting further damage when possible.

In the fifth, Nelson reached base again with a walk, and Wilson added another hit, but the Trojans were unable to push across a run. Desert Oasis continued their comeback effort in the bottom half, stringing together hits to eventually take the lead in a high-scoring back-and-forth stretch.
Refusing to back down, the Trojans answered in the sixth. Paul Walker led off with a double, and Selbach followed by reaching on an error to put runners in scoring position. Mendoza drew a walk to load the bases, and Delgado brought in a run with a groundout. Chiancone added pressure with a bunt that resulted in an error and another run, helping Pahrump Valley reclaim the lead at 15-14.

On the mound, Selbach took over pitching duties, working through a difficult inning before Kevin Farrell came in to record a key strikeout and close out the sixth.
In the final inning, the Trojans looked to add insurance but were unable to extend their lead. Desert Oasis managed to push across additional runs in the bottom half, turning the game into a tight finish.

While the game evolved into a back-and-forth battle, the Trojans’ explosive first inning and continued fight highlighted the team’s ability to compete, adjust, and respond under pressure—valuable experience as they move deeper into the season.
