The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ varsity volleyball team delivered an energetic and competitive performance on their home court Thursday, April 23, facing off against the The Meadows School Mustangs in a four-set battle that highlighted both grit and growth.
The Trojans came out sharp in the opening set, setting the tone early behind consistent serving and aggressive play at the net. William Coen helped spark the first point from the service line, and despite an early exchange of points, Pahrump began to find its rhythm. Andy Sanchez quickly made his presence felt, delivering multiple well-placed spikes and keeping the Mustangs on their heels.
A strong serving run from Elijah Thompson pushed the Trojans ahead 6-3, including an ace that energized the home crowd. Sanchez continued to mix power with finesse, tipping balls into open space and hammering shots into the corners. Even as Meadows chipped away and eventually tied the set at 9-9, Pahrump responded with composure.

The middle portion of the set featured key defensive moments, including a standout block from James Wilson and a deep save that kept a rally alive and ultimately swung a point back to the Trojans. Late in the set, Coen’s serving helped maintain a slim advantage, and Sanchez delivered the finishing touch—an ace that clipped just over the net—to seal a 25-22 win.
The second set proved more challenging, as Meadows adjusted and capitalized on momentum swings. Sanchez again led the offensive charge with powerful swings, and Thompson contributed from the service line, but the Mustangs steadily built a lead. Pahrump showed flashes of resilience, stringing together points late in the set, but ultimately fell 25-17.
In the third set, the Mustangs carried that momentum forward, jumping out to an early lead. The Trojans battled back with improved communication and strong attacking play, including a thunderous spike from Sanchez that brought the crowd to life. Alexander Mahoney added a highlight of his own with a hard cross-court kill, helping Pahrump close the gap midway through the set.
Despite the push, Meadows maintained control down the stretch, using a combination of precise serving and consistent attacking to pull away for a 25-14 win.

The fourth set was the most competitive of the match, with both teams trading points in a tightly contested battle. Sanchez continued to lead from the front, mixing in tips and powerful back-row attacks, while contributions from George Anderson and Mahoney at the net kept Pahrump within striking distance.
Nick Watson added a key service point during a mid-set surge, and the Trojans clawed their way back to tie the set at 19-19 after capitalizing on Mustang errors. The gym stayed loud as both sides fought for control, but Meadows edged ahead in the final moments, closing out the set 25-21.
While the match ended in a 3-1 loss, the Trojans showcased determination, strong individual performances, and moments of high-level play throughout the evening. From Sanchez’s consistent offensive pressure to timely defensive plays and contributions across the lineup, Pahrump demonstrated the kind of effort and competitiveness that continues to build momentum as the season progresses.
