Local residents interested in learning more about the proposed sale of Great Basin Water Company and what it could mean for the future of water service in Pahrump will have an opportunity to hear directly from the company involved during an upcoming community meeting.
The Private Well Owners Association (PWOA) announced that a representative from CalWater — the company purchasing Great Basin Water Company, also known as Nexus Water Group — will serve as the guest speaker during the organization’s regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 1.
The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Pahrump Valley Museum, located at 401 E. Basin Ave., and is free and open to the public.
According to PWOA leadership, the invitation was extended in an effort to provide factual information directly from the company amid ongoing community discussion surrounding the proposed acquisition.
Justin Skarb, Vice President of Government and Community Affairs for California Water Service Group (CalWater), confirmed he will attend and speak during the meeting.
“As well owners, of course we are concerned about a new water utility’s expansion plan in the Pahrump Valley,” said Budd Watkins, chair of the nonprofit organization. “We thought, why not ask CalWater directly what their intentions are, and they accepted our invitation.”
During the meeting, Skarb is expected to provide information regarding the purchase of Great Basin Water Company and answer questions from private well owners. Organizers also anticipate time for general audience questions following the presentation.
The meeting comes as local interest continues surrounding the pending transaction and what future utility operations could look like in Southern Nevada.
California Water Service Group, commonly known as CalWater, is a water and wastewater utility headquartered in San Jose, California. The company reports serving more than two million customers across California, Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas and Washington. If the acquisition moves forward, the purchase would expand CalWater’s operations into both Nevada and Oregon.
According to information provided by the organization, CalWater’s application with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission under Docket #26-04013 is expected to be completed later this year.
The Private Well Owners Association is a local educational nonprofit focused on helping private well owners better understand well management practices, water conservation and preserving Basin 162 while supporting Pahrump’s rural lifestyle. The group hosts free monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of each month.
