Berklee Wells, the creative force behind Berklee Dee Photography, has turned her passion for capturing moments into a thriving business that reflects her unique journey and evolving artistic vision. From the early days of carrying around an iPod with a camera to becoming a sought-after photographer, Berklee’s path has been one of self-discovery, growth, and a deepening love for the art of photography.
Berklee’s interest in photography was sparked at a young age when she began experimenting with the camera on her iPod. “I started just like carrying my iPod with me everywhere, listening to music and taking pictures,” she recalls. Encouraged by friends and family who noticed her natural talent, Berklee began to consider photography as more than just a hobby. However, it wasn’t until she was working at Taco Bell after high school, unsure of her future, that her then-boyfriend, now-husband, suggested she pursue photography seriously. “What are you good at?” he asked, and Berklee realized that her love for capturing images might just be her calling.
Without formal training, Berklee took the initiative to teach herself the fundamentals of photography. She purchased her first camera, completed online courses to learn the basics, and practiced tirelessly. “Everything was read online and interpreted into real life and practice,” Berklee explains, highlighting her self-taught journey. This hands-on approach allowed her to develop a unique style and gain confidence in her abilities as a photographer.
Initially, Berklee specialized in couples and wedding photography, drawn to the romance and emotional connections in her subjects. However, her focus began to shift after she became a mother. “After I had a kid of my own, I found I really like to shoot families,” she shares. This change in direction allowed Berklee to capture the evolving stories of her clients as they transitioned from couples to families. She now finds joy in documenting these intimate, everyday moments, something she once avoided. “I love that as they evolve and I evolve, I kind of get to transition with them into their lives,” Berklee says, appreciating the continuity and connection with her long-term clients.
One of Berklee’s most memorable experiences as a photographer came unexpectedly when she was hired to shoot the Bat Mitzvah of David Copperfield’s daughter. “Their assistant had reached out to me, so I didn’t really know that’s who it was,” Berklee recalls. It wasn’t until she arrived at Copperfield’s home that she realized the significance of the event. “That was memorable just because of who it was, how extravagant the event was,” she notes, reflecting on the surreal experience.
Berklee’s approach to photography is centered around creating a comfortable and authentic atmosphere for her clients. Rather than relying on stiff, posed shots, she encourages natural interactions by giving her subjects prompts and directions that foster genuine connections. “I want you to get in close and touch your hands,” she might tell a couple, aiming to capture those small, intimate moments that make each photo unique. Berklee’s technique involves starting with wide shots and then moving in closer to focus on the details, ensuring that she captures both the broader scene and the personal touches that define each session.
In terms of equipment, Berklee currently uses a Nikon Z6II, a mirrorless camera that offers advanced features like touch screens and real-time feedback. “The new technology of cameras is insane,” she enthuses, appreciating the precision and control that modern cameras provide.
To keep her photography fresh and inspired, Berklee regularly plans creative shoots for herself, separate from her client work. These personal projects allow her to experiment with different styles, locations, and concepts, which she can then incorporate into her professional sessions. “Planning creative shoots for myself helps keep me inspired,” she explains, noting that these shoots are opportunities to push her artistic boundaries and refine her techniques.
Challenges during photo shoots, such as uncooperative children or difficult lighting, are met with patience and adaptability. Berklee’s experience as a mother has given her valuable insights into handling temperamental toddlers, allowing her to create a stress-free environment for both children and parents. “I just kind of take things as they come and try to make everyone feel the least amount of stress as I can,” she says, emphasizing her calm and flexible approach.
For aspiring photographers, Berklee’s advice is simple: keep shooting. She acknowledges the pressure of social media and the temptation to compare oneself to others, but she encourages beginners to focus on their own growth. “If you truly love to do it, just keep shooting, keep practicing,” she advises, confident that improvement comes with time and experience.
In addition to photography, Berklee has also ventured into website design, a natural extension of her creative skills. She first developed her own website and then began offering her services to other small businesses in her community. “I like helping other small businesses here, and that’s kind of a service I can offer,” she explains. Berklee tailors each website to the client’s needs, focusing on creative organization and the personality of the business. Her dual expertise in photography and website design allows her to provide a comprehensive service, often combining both for clients who need professional photos for their online presence.
Balancing work and family life is an ongoing challenge for Berklee, especially since she works from home. She consciously schedules time for her family, sometimes intentionally leaving weekends open to ensure she can spend quality time with her husband and daughter. “I try to be a little bit more tentative towards planning myself into… planning my family into my business schedule too,” she shares, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries between work and personal life.
As Berklee reflects on her journey, she has developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of the desert landscape she once overlooked. Growing up in Pahrump, she initially yearned to shoot in greener, more lush environments, but over time, she has come to see the unique beauty of the desert. “I guess I just like finding beauty in places you wouldn’t see it,” she muses, enjoying the challenge of creating stunning images in seemingly mundane or ordinary settings.
Berklee’s ability to “see the beauty in the most mundane or ordinary” is what sets her apart as a photographer. Her eye for detail, coupled with her passion for creativity, has allowed her to build a successful business that continues to evolve alongside her personal journey. Through her lens, Berklee captures not just images, but stories—stories of love, family, and the everyday magic that surrounds us all.
