The Pahrump Valley High School junior varsity girls’ soccer team made the most of a shortened road match Wednesday, Aug. 26, earning a 2-0 victory over Cimarron-Memorial High School.
The start of the game was delayed due to a high heat index as well as lightning strikes in the area. With the varsity teams still scheduled to take the field afterward, the JV teams agreed to play a single 20-minute half rather than a full match.
Despite having considerably less time to work with, the Trojans quickly began creating opportunities around the Cimarron-Memorial goal.
Just over two minutes into the game, Brooklyn McMahon drew a foul to give Pahrump a free kick. The Trojans worked the ball from Bianette Lozano Chavez to McMahon and then ahead for a shot that traveled just wide of the right side of the goal.
Pahrump continued to apply pressure. Around the five-minute mark, the Trojans sent another shot toward the goal from distance, but the Cimarron-Memorial goalkeeper was there for the save.
The Trojans followed with another opportunity shortly afterward, sending a ball across the front of the goal. The ball bounced around in traffic before the goalkeeper was able to collect it and end the threat.
The Trojans broke through eight minutes into the match, finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
Pahrump was back on the attack almost immediately. About a minute later, Raylee made a run toward the goal, forcing the Cimarron-Memorial goalkeeper to come off her line to break up the play.
The Trojans added their second goal after the Cimarron-Memorial keeper attempted to clear the ball away. Pahrump regained possession and converted the opportunity with Isabella Tavaglione taking the shot and extending the advantage to 2-0.
McMahon helped generate another chance around the 15-minute mark, centering the ball and continuing to follow the play before the Cimarron-Memorial defense was able to clear it away.
Pahrump continued pushing forward through the closing minutes and earned a corner kick just before time expired. The Trojans were unable to turn the final opportunity into another shot on goal before the whistle sounded, securing the 2-0 victory in the abbreviated match.
With only 20 minutes available, the Trojans had little time to settle into the game, but they took advantage of their opportunities and kept Cimarron-Memorial off the scoreboard to come away with the road win.
