Miranda Knight – Class of 2016

Miranda Knight’s path to success as a salon owner in Las Vegas traces all the way back to her days at Pahrump Valley High School, where subtle moments and everyday encouragement helped shape her confidence and sense of purpose.

Though she wasn’t involved in sports or clubs, Miranda found her footing in the school’s culinary program, where she spent all four years exploring her creative side. “Ms. Nicholas would have cooking competitions and bring in teachers as judges,” she recalled. “It was like being on a cooking show—it was fun.” Those classroom competitions provided her with a sense of excitement and engagement, something she would later carry into her career.

Another moment that stood out came during her senior year, when one of her teachers, Ms. K, noticed her love of reading. “She saw me reading a lot and gave me a copy of one of her favorite books with a note explaining why it was her favorite,” Miranda said. “I loved the book—I still have it.” That small act of personal connection left a lasting impact and deepened Miranda’s appreciation for mentorship and encouragement—two things that would prove crucial later in her professional journey.

While she hasn’t stayed directly involved with PVHS since graduation, Miranda remains connected to her high school community in another way: through her work. “Between social media and being a hairstylist for quite a few people from school, I’ve been able to maintain relationships with lots of people from school, which is awesome,” she said.

Looking back, she credits her high school experience with teaching her one of the most valuable skills she uses to this day—discipline. “School taught me to stay on top of my responsibilities and develop routines for that,” she said, a trait that would later become essential as she built her own business from the ground up.

After graduating from PVHS, Miranda jumped straight into cosmetology school, confident in her career choice—a passion she had nurtured since middle school. “I was fortunate enough to know exactly what I wanted to do,” she said. “Probably since middle school I knew I was going to go straight to cosmetology after graduation. I was cutting my friends’ hair—although poorly—since we were kids.”

She attended beauty school part-time while working, which extended her education to two years but allowed her to gain real-world experience along the way. Instead of following the common path of starting in a commission-based salon or going through an assistant program, Miranda took a bold leap by jumping straight into booth rental. “I was ready to bet on myself and my skill set,” she said. That gamble opened doors for her early on, including a mentorship with the salon owner who helped her refine her craft and continues to offer guidance to this day.

After working in a second salon and building strong friendships, Miranda reached a turning point and decided to open her own space. Nearly two years ago, she launched VALURE Knight & Co.—a boutique salon in Las Vegas. “Opening my salon was my greatest achievement so far,” she said. “It’s been the most rewarding challenge.” Her talent and dedication were soon recognized when she was featured in a local magazine as one of the top 50 hairstylists in Las Vegas.

As fulfilling as it has been, running a salon comes with its fair share of challenges. From promoting herself as a stylist to handling the business side of managing a space, Miranda has had to balance many hats. “Delegating time between taking care of the salon, marketing, supporting my stylist team, and seeing my own clients was a challenge,” she said. But with a detailed daily schedule and strong organizational habits, she’s found a rhythm that works.

Among the most important lessons she’s learned is the power of asking for help. “Asking for help is not a bad thing,” she said. “Learning from the people around you who have been through similar situations is a blessing.” Miranda points to the ongoing support of her family, her fiancé Calvin, and even a former client turned business coach as key figures in helping her meet her goals. “A lot of my family owns their own businesses, so it seemed natural to want to own my own salon,” she said. “They’ve always been encouraging and helpful. Calvin helps around the salon and keeps encouraging me.”

Miranda and Calvin have been together for six years, and their relationship has grown stronger through shared experiences—including Calvin’s military service. The couple got engaged after Calvin returned from a year-long deployment, an emotional reunion that marked the beginning of a new chapter. They were engaged for two years before tying the knot in January 2025 at the beautiful Stirling Country Club in Las Vegas. “We were so excited to be reunited,” Miranda shared. “It was a special day and something we’d been looking forward to for a long time.”

To aspiring hairstylists or entrepreneurs, Miranda offers this advice: “Find a salon you love with a healthy environment that allows room for growth. And find a mentor to help guide you through your journey. It’s a very unique career path with so many different avenues to explore.”

While she isn’t currently involved in community service or volunteer work due to her demanding schedule, Miranda hopes to make time for it in the future. For now, she prioritizes time with family and friends when she can. She and Calvin share a home with their two dogs—a pit bull named Dema and a Yorkie terrier named Bobo. “I’m a big reader—that’s probably what I do the most when I’m at home,” she said. “I also go to a lot of concerts and movies.”

Balancing a personal life with a demanding professional role hasn’t been easy, and Miranda acknowledges that truthfully. “I think the hard truth is balance isn’t always obtainable,” she said. “I definitely try my best to, but sometimes you have to sacrifice things like social events in order to show up for yourself in your career.”

As for the future, Miranda has big plans. “Currently, my salon is a small three-chair salon with five stylists, and we’re quickly outgrowing it—which is amazing,” she said. “I plan to expand to a larger salon in the next year or two.”

From culinary competitions at PVHS to commanding her own salon in Las Vegas, Miranda Knight has crafted a journey marked by confidence, clarity, and care. Her story is a testament to what’s possible when you blend early ambition with long-term vision—and never stop learning along the way.
