The Pahrump Valley High School junior varsity softball team put together a strong all-around performance on the road Tuesday, April 21, earning a 19-2 win over the Moapa Valley Pirates behind disciplined at-bats, aggressive base running, and steady defensive play.
Batting first, the Trojans immediately put pressure on the Pirates’ defense. While Aviana Michel was retired to open the game, Quinn Kaucky worked a walk and Elianna Stepp entered as a pinch runner. Claudia Lopez followed by reaching after being hit by a pitch, and Pahrump Valley quickly turned to aggressive baserunning to create scoring opportunities. Stepp took advantage, stealing home for the game’s first run, helping the Trojans jump out in front despite a later rundown at the plate that ended the inning.

With an early lead in hand, April Ivy took the circle for Pahrump Valley, with Kaucky behind the plate. The Trojans backed their pitcher with steady defense in the bottom of the first, working around a leadoff baserunner and limiting Moapa’s chances to keep the momentum firmly on Pahrump Valley’s side. The Pirates attempted to manufacture runs with aggressive steals, but a key out came when a batter was ruled out for stepping out of the batter’s box during a steal attempt. Pahrump Valley closed the inning with a routine play at first, maintaining the 2-0 advantage.

The Trojans added to their lead in the second. Raegan Saldaña grounded out to start the inning, but Ivy worked a walk and quickly moved into scoring position with steals of both second and third. After a fly ball resulted in an out on the bases, Kaucky delivered with a high fly ball to center that dropped in, allowing a run to score and extending the lead to 3-0. The Trojans’ baserunning continued to shine as Kaucky stole second, third, and then home, pushing the lead to 4-0 before the inning came to a close.

Moapa threatened briefly in the bottom of the second, but the Trojans turned in one of their strongest defensive sequences of the game. Ivy recorded an out at first on a fielded ball, and after a dropped fly created an opportunity, the Trojans responded with a sharp defensive play—retiring a runner at first and then cutting down another at third on a tag by Tierra Demers following a strong throw from Saldaña to end the inning.

The third inning proved to be the turning point, as Pahrump Valley broke the game open. Bella McHugh reached on an infield play and immediately made an impact on the bases, stealing second and third before scoring on a hit by Saldaña to make it 5-0. Ivy followed with a walk to load the bases, and Alexa Kumm delivered a key extra-base hit to the outfield, driving in runs to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Trojans continued to pile on with smart baserunning and patient hitting. Kaucky drew another walk, and multiple runners advanced and scored on steals and well-placed hits. Additional runs came across on balls put in play and walks with the bases loaded, as Pahrump Valley surged to a commanding lead.

Moapa answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a couple of hits to make it 15-2, but the Trojans quickly regained control. Ivy recorded a strikeout, and the defense tightened up behind her, including a clean play at shortstop by Michel and a strong catch to close the inning.
In the fourth, Pahrump Valley added insurance. Michel led off with a well-hit ball to center that turned into a double, and Arielle Perry followed with a walk. With the bases loaded, Demers came through with a hard-hit ball through the infield, driving in two more runs to extend the lead. The Trojans continued to capitalize on walks, bringing in additional runs to push the score to 19-2 before the inning ended.
Moapa managed to plate one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a deep hit down the line, but the Trojans quickly shut the door. A fly ball was secured in the outfield, Demers handled a grounder at third and made the throw to first, and Ivy finished the game with a strikeout to seal the victory.
From start to finish, the Trojans combined timely hitting, relentless baserunning, and solid defensive execution to secure the win, showcasing their depth and ability to capitalize on opportunities throughout the lineup.
