The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans opened strong in their home matchup against the Clark High School Chargers on Wednesday, April 10, keeping the energy high through the early innings before ultimately falling 5-1.
Senior pitcher Andrew Zurn set the tone for the Trojans from the start, delivering a commanding first inning that saw the Chargers go three up, three down with a strikeout, a line out to second, and a routine grounder to third. That momentum carried into the bottom of the first as the Trojans loaded the bases without a single hit—Tony Whitney, Vinny Whitney, and Zurn were all hit by pitches in succession. Aidyn Cratty brought in Tony Whitney on a groundout, putting Pahrump on the board first. Despite the strong start, the Trojans left two on base as a strikeout and ground out closed the inning.

Defensively, the Trojans continued to hold their own. In the top of the second, an early error put a Charger on base, but second baseman Anthony Montanez stayed sharp, snagging a line drive and teaming up with Cratty to turn a clean play that ended the inning without any damage.

The Trojans threatened again in the bottom half of the inning. Jack Walker earned a walk and singles by both Whitney brothers loaded the bases for a second straight inning. But the Trojans couldn’t convert, as the inning ended on a fielder’s choice.
The third inning was another showcase for the Trojans’ defense. Zurn delivered a strikeout, and Tony Whitney and Kayne Horibe handled a pair of outs to keep Clark quiet. Offensively, Pahrump put runners in scoring position again after Cratty reached on a single and advanced on an error, but the Trojans were unable to bring him home.

Clark found its rhythm in the fourth. After a quick fly out to Horibe in center, the Chargers loaded the bases through a single, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. From there, a combination of timely hitting and a fielding miscue allowed five runs to cross the plate. The Trojans managed to stop the bleeding with a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop, but the Chargers had claimed a 5-1 lead.

Despite the score, the Trojans never stopped battling. The defense remained solid for the remainder of the game, with Vinny Whitney relieving Zurn at pitcher in the top of the 6th. The offense continued to challenge Clark’s pitchers, putting the ball in play consistently. However, continuous winds proved challenging for both teams. Several fly balls that might have dropped for base hits on a calmer day hung just long enough to be caught, limiting the Trojans’ ability to spark a late rally.
Though the scoreboard didn’t reflect their effort, the Trojans showed strong pitching, heads-up defense, and a readiness to capitalize early. With continued grit and execution, this team remains one to watch.
