For Dan Pineau, a run for Nye County Sheriff is less about stepping into a new role and more about continuing a long-standing commitment to a community he has spent nearly three decades serving. Drawing on more than 20 years in local law enforcement, Pineau says his decision to enter the race is rooted in both professional experience and personal connection to the people who call Nye County home.
Pineau brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience within Nye County, a place he says has been both the foundation of his career and his personal life.
“I’ve dedicated more than two decades of my life to serving the people of Nye County,” he said. “This community isn’t just where I work — it’s where I’ve built my life, friendships, and future.”
Having lived in the area for approximately 27 years, Pineau said it was the sense of community that led him to stay and put down roots. Over time, that connection deepened as he built relationships across the county through his work and everyday life.
“There’s something special about living in a place where neighbors still look out for each other,” he said.
Outside of the campaign trail, Pineau maintains a full-time work schedule and spends his downtime enjoying the outdoors and time with loved ones. Whether it’s camping, fishing or riding in the sand dunes, he said those moments serve as a reminder of why he values the community he hopes to serve in a new capacity.
Professionally, Pineau points to his years in law enforcement and the relationships he has built as a source of pride. Personally, he said his journey has been shaped by perseverance.
“I’m proud that despite challenges and setbacks in life, I kept moving forward, learned from failures, and never gave up,” he said.
That perspective has also influenced his decision to run for sheriff. Pineau said his campaign is driven by a desire to strengthen the department and enhance public safety through a more proactive approach.
“I believe the people of Nye County deserve a Sheriff who is visible, accountable, supports deputies, and focuses on preventing crime rather than simply responding to it after the fact,” he said.
Throughout his campaign, Pineau emphasized that his motivations go beyond the position itself, describing his candidacy as personal and rooted in long-standing values.
“Behind the campaign signs and speeches is someone who deeply values service, loyalty, honesty, and community,” he said. “I’m not running for a title — I’m running because I believe Nye County can do better.”
Those values — including integrity, accountability, fairness and service — are central to how he approaches leadership and decision-making. He said he believes in taking responsibility, being transparent and treating people with respect.
Looking ahead, Pineau defines success in the role as rebuilding trust between the Sheriff’s Office and the community, improving morale within the department and ensuring residents feel safe in their neighborhoods.
“I want people to feel like their Sheriff’s Office is proactive, responsive, and truly working for them,” he said.
He also pointed to opportunities for growth within the county, including strengthening staffing and training, improving transparency, expanding community engagement and placing a greater emphasis on youth outreach and addressing drug-related crime.
If elected, Pineau said he hopes his tenure would be remembered for restoring leadership and strengthening connections both within the department and across the community.
“I hope people would say that deputies felt supported again, the community felt heard again, and that Nye County became safer and more united,” he said.
While his career has largely been spent in law enforcement, Pineau noted that those who know him personally often see a different side.
“People might be surprised to know that despite my years in law enforcement, I’m actually very approachable and down to earth,” he said, adding that life experiences have helped shape both his perspective and leadership style.
As he continues his campaign, Pineau said his focus remains on service and the future of the community he has called home for nearly three decades.
“This campaign is not about politics for me — it’s about service,” he said. “I care deeply about the future of Nye County, protecting our families, supporting law enforcement, and making sure future generations can grow up in a safe community we can all be proud of.”
