The Pahrump Aztecs Silver 17U club baseball team battled throughout all seven innings Tuesday night in Pahrump, putting together a late comeback effort before ultimately falling 8-3 to EA Rattlers Legion Silver.
Despite the final score, the Aztecs showed flashes on both sides of the ball, highlighted by defensive plays up the middle, timely pitching changes and a sixth-inning rally that erased a three-run deficit and tied the game heading into the final frame.
Pahrump opened the game defensively with Keith Lawrence on the mound and quickly settled in after the visitors put runners aboard. After recording the first two outs, the Aztecs worked out of trouble when Anthony Montanez and Kevin Farrell combined for a pair of defensive plays on the infield and stranded multiple runners.

The Aztecs’ offense started in the bottom of the first when Montanez drew a walk and showed aggressiveness on the basepaths, but the inning ended before Pahrump could push across an early run.
The second inning featured one of the defensive highlights of the night for the Aztecs. After allowing a leadoff walk, Pahrump turned a clean double play with Montanez fielding at shortstop, flipping to Ryan Hamlin at second and finishing at first with Farrell to erase the threat. Montanez stayed active defensively and closed the inning with another play at short.
Pahrump created traffic in the bottom half when Paul Walker delivered a line-drive single and Lawrence reached after being hit by a pitch, but the visitors escaped without damage.
The Rattlers broke through in the third inning after the Aztecs turned to Logan Nunez on the mound. The visitors strung together a few hits and took advantage of extra bases to move ahead 2-0.

The Aztecs answered in the bottom of the third. Austin Abuelar sparked the offense with a line-drive single to center and Nunez followed with a walk to put two runners aboard. Although Pahrump couldn’t cash in during the inning, the pressure began building.
Nunez settled in during the fourth inning and delivered an important shutdown frame. After surrendering a leadoff double, he recorded a strikeout and received strong defensive support from Hamlin at second and Daniel Aguilar at third to strand the runner.
Pahrump threatened again in the bottom of the fourth as Hamlin and Walker each collected singles, but the Aztecs were unable to bring either home.

The visitors extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth, but Hamlin entered to pitch and helped stop further damage. One of the key moments came when the Aztecs caught a runner attempting to steal home, preventing the inning from becoming larger.
That momentum carried directly into the bottom half.
Lawrence opened the inning with another hit, and after Farrell and Aguilar moved the inning along, Abuelar came through with one of the biggest swings of the game, driving in Pahrump’s first run to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The offense kept rolling.
Nunez reached after being hit by a pitch, and Damon Eagan delivered another RBI single to center to bring home Abuelar and make it 3-2. Zane Tuck followed with a single to keep the rally alive and suddenly the Aztecs had the tying run ninety feet away before the inning ended.
The sixth inning featured more strong pitching and defense from Hamlin. After allowing a leadoff walk, he worked around traffic with a strikeout, while Hamlin and Montanez teamed up to catch a runner attempting to advance and preserve the one-run game.

Pahrump completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth.
Montanez started the inning with a single and Sammy Mendoza worked a walk. Hamlin then delivered perhaps the biggest hit of the night for the Aztecs, ripping a double to left to put the tying runs in scoring position.
Walker was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Denton brought home the tying run with a productive groundout that scored Mendoza and tied the game at 3-3. Lawrence was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, but the visitors escaped before the Aztecs could take their first lead.
With the game tied entering the seventh, the Rattlers capitalized on a combination of bunts, walks and aggressive baserunning to regain momentum and score five runs.
Even then, the Aztecs continued battling.
Facing the final inning, Aguilar, Abuelar and Nunez each battled at the plate, but the visitors closed the door to secure the win.
Pahrump finished with contributions throughout the lineup. Walker recorded two hits, Hamlin added two hits including a key double, Abuelar collected two hits and an RBI, while Lawrence reached base multiple times and scored the comeback effort. Defensively, Montanez stood out with several plays at shortstop and helped anchor multiple momentum-changing outs throughout the game.
On the mound, the Aztecs received innings from Lawrence, Nunez, Hamlin and Farrell as they worked together to navigate all seven innings in a competitive home matchup.
