As the Nevada Legislature continues its 2025 session in Carson City, state lawmakers are making decisions that could soon impact families, voters, and businesses right here in Nye County. From election reforms and healthcare protections to new public safety measures, dozens of bills are being debated and voted on—some with strong implications for our local way of life.
Here’s a look at some of the most talked-about legislation passed or under consideration in the Assembly that residents of Pahrump and the surrounding areas may want to know about:
Protecting the Ballot Process
Nevada voters may soon see improvements to how elections are handled thanks to AB148, a bill that passed the Assembly and ensures sample ballots are delivered before official mail ballots in future election cycles. This fix addresses confusion experienced by voters in 2024 and aims to keep the process clearer and more consistent.
Public Safety on the Roadways
A tragic story out of Las Vegas helped bring attention to AB111, a bill that has now passed the Assembly. Nicknamed Jaya’s Law, it would impose tougher penalties on wrong-way drivers—something many Nevadans feel is long overdue. It’s a step forward in promoting safer roads throughout the state, including here in Nye County.
Hospice Rights for Families in Difficult Times
Healthcare was also front and center this session. The Assembly passed AB161, establishing a “Hospice Bill of Rights.” This legislation is designed to protect individuals and their families from fraud and mistreatment during end-of-life care. For many families in rural communities like ours, this could provide peace of mind during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Animal Advocacy Shows Power of the Public Voice
A shining example of community engagement this session was the turnaround of Reba’s Law, which increases penalties for animal abuse. After initial setbacks, a wave of public support—including petitions, letters, and media coverage—helped revive the bill and push it forward. It’s a reminder that our voices do matter, even in state politics.
Other Measures Being Watched
Several other proposals are still making their way through the process and have sparked conversations across the state:
- AJR1, which would raise property taxes, is advancing and could be voted on soon.
- AB245, a bill banning semi-automatic firearm possession for people under 21, passed out of committee and may continue forward.
- AB205, addressing changes to sex education in schools, remains in discussion.
- AB262 would allow individuals previously convicted of voter fraud to register voters.
- AB184 would introduce fines for intentionally releasing balloons—a bill centered on environmental protection.
As always, residents can follow these bills and share their thoughts with their elected representatives. Civic participation continues to play a key role in shaping the laws that affect our towns and neighborhoods.
