As wearable technology continues to advance, the Nye County School District (NCSD) is taking proactive steps to address how emerging devices are used on school campuses. District officials recently issued clarification that AI-enabled eyewear — commonly referred to as “smart glasses” — falls under existing rules governing student cell phone and electronic device use.
According to a press release issued February 20, the District confirmed that smart glasses equipped with cameras or recording capabilities are subject to Board Regulation 7363R: Student Use of Cell Phones on School Property. The clarification is intended to ensure consistency as new technologies become more widely available to students.
Under the current regulation, all personal electronic recording devices must remain powered off and stored out of sight from the moment a student arrives on campus until the final bell rings. District officials emphasized that the policy applies equally to wearable devices capable of recording audio, video or images.
The District highlighted several key points regarding AI eyewear:
• Students are prohibited from using any electronic device to photograph or record other students or staff during the school day.
• AI glasses or other visible recording devices may be immediately confiscated by school administrators and returned only to a parent or guardian.
• Even when fitted with prescription lenses, smart glasses are not permitted during the school day because of their recording capabilities. Students who require vision correction must instead wear standard, non-electronic eyewear while on campus.
Superintendent Dr. Joe Gent said the clarification reflects the District’s ongoing effort to balance technological advancement with student safety and privacy.
“Our primary goal is to protect the privacy of our students and staff while maintaining a classroom environment free from digital distractions,” Gent said. “Treating AI glasses with the same high standards as cell phones is a necessary step in keeping our schools a safe space for everyone.”
District officials noted that the clarification does not introduce a new rule but reinforces how existing policy applies to evolving technology. As devices become more sophisticated, NCSD leaders say maintaining clear expectations helps preserve both privacy and a focused learning environment.
