Virginia Weir, a 2019 graduate of Pahrump Valley High School, has already made significant strides in her young career, balancing a passion for education, athletics, and a commitment to the medical field. With a degree in biology and a minor in communications from Arizona State University, she is now on the verge of beginning an intensive physician assistant (PA) program at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Virginia’s journey has been one of dedication, perseverance, and a deep-rooted desire to give back to her community, something she has demonstrated throughout her academic and professional career.

Reflecting on her high school years, Virginia recalls her fondest memories revolving around athletics and student leadership. As a multi-sport athlete, she played volleyball, basketball, and softball, forming close bonds with teammates she had known since childhood. Growing up in Pahrump, she participated in local leagues like the Jr. Trojans teams, and continued playing alongside the same friends throughout high school. Sports were more than just a pastime for her—they were an essential part of her development, fostering leadership skills, discipline, and a competitive spirit that would serve her well in the years to come.

Beyond athletics, Virginia was an active member of the Student Council and Honor Society, two organizations that allowed her to contribute meaningfully to her school and community. One of her most significant achievements during this time was working with her close friend, Halie Souza, to establish a Frisbee Disc Golf Park behind the NyE Communities Coalition building. This initiative, completed in 2018-2019, remains a lasting testament to her commitment to community service and teamwork.

Although she has moved on from high school, Virginia has maintained strong connections with Pahrump Valley High School. She frequently stays in touch with former classmates and coaches, including veteran coach Bob Hopkins. Now a coach herself, she has taken on the responsibility of leading the softball team at Beatty High School, where she also teaches social studies as a long-term sub. Having grown up under the guidance of dedicated coaches, like Coach Hopkins and Coach Rich Lauver, she hopes to instill the same values in her players, ensuring that they receive the same mentorship and support that shaped her own athletic career.

During her time at Pahrump Valley High School, Virginia was deeply influenced by several outstanding teachers who helped shape her academic path. One of her favorite teachers was Mr. Mason, who taught chemistry and physics. His engaging teaching style and ability to break down complex scientific concepts made a lasting impression on her. Virginia recalls that his classes were not only informative but also fun, as he frequently incorporated real-life applications and hands-on experiments to bring science to life. His passion for the subject inspired her interest in biology and ultimately contributed to her decision to pursue a career in the medical field.

Another influential teacher was Mr. Nygaard, who taught biology. His in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject captivated Virginia, reinforcing her love for science. She fondly remembers his structured yet dynamic approach to teaching, where he encouraged curiosity and critical thinking. He played a key role in solidifying her desire to pursue a career in healthcare, as his lessons on anatomy and physiology provided her with a strong foundation for her future studies.

In addition to her science teachers, Virginia credits her coaches as major influences in her life. They instilled in her the values of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, which have remained with her throughout her journey. Their mentorship extended beyond sports, as they provided guidance and support in academics and personal growth as well. The combination of academic and athletic mentors played a crucial role in preparing her for the challenges she would face in college and beyond.

After high school, Virginia moved to Arizona to attend Arizona State University, where she pursued a major in biology with an emphasis in pharmacology and toxicology. She also minored in communications, a decision that would later prove invaluable in both her teaching and medical aspirations. During her college years, she met her best friend, Katie, who became an important part of her journey. Virginia believes that making meaningful connections and friendships along the way is essential and encourages others to go out and experience something new. Graduating magna cum laude in 2023, she consistently made the dean’s list and excelled academically while simultaneously gaining critical hands-on experience in the medical field.

Virginia’s preparation for PA school has been intense, requiring her to meet numerous prerequisites, including clinical hours, patient care experience, shadowing, and volunteer work. The rigorous application process also required multiple letters of recommendation from professors and medical professionals. She recalls the stressful nature of interviews, where she learned to approach them with a more relaxed mindset after early rejections. Her persistence and ability to refine her approach ultimately led to her acceptance into Lincoln Memorial University’s PA program, a moment she describes as a huge emotional relief.

Virginia attributes much of her success and determination to her mother, Laura, whose career in the school district served as an inspiration. Laura started as a teacher and steadily worked her way up, demonstrating the value of perseverance, hard work, and dedication to education. Watching her mother navigate the challenges of the educational system and achieve success instilled in Virginia the belief that she, too, could overcome obstacles and make a meaningful impact. Laura’s unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping Virginia’s aspirations, providing her with the confidence and motivation to pursue her dreams in both education and medicine.

Beyond her mother’s influence, Virginia’s entire family has played a vital role in her journey. Her father and siblings have always been her biggest cheerleaders, supporting her through every step of her academic and athletic endeavors. From attending her games as a child to helping her prepare for the rigorous PA school application process, her family has remained a steadfast pillar of encouragement. Whether it was long nights spent studying, the emotional challenges of working in pediatric oncology as a CNA at Summerlin Hospital, or the excitement of getting accepted into PA school, her family was there to celebrate her victories and provide reassurance during her struggles. Their belief in her potential has fueled her determination to succeed and give back to communities like the one she grew up in.

As she prepares to begin PA school, Virginia is focused on maintaining a balance between academic rigor and personal well-being. The first year, known as the didactic year, will involve intensive coursework, with classes from 8 AM to 5 PM followed by hours of studying. She understands the importance of taking small moments to decompress, whether by spending time with her dog, engaging in light physical activities, or simply stepping away from academics for a mental reset. She emphasizes the importance of structured study habits and self-care, recognizing that the demands of PA school will be challenging.

Outside of her academic pursuits, Virginia has a wide range of hobbies that help her stay grounded. She enjoys hiking with her dog, playing sports recreationally, and attending sporting events. A devoted sports fan, she follows Dodger baseball and NASCAR closely and is excited about an upcoming trip to Talladega for a NASCAR race.

Virginia also wants to spread awareness about the PA profession, as she believes many people don’t fully understand the role PAs play in healthcare. She emphasizes that PAs are licensed medical professionals who undergo rigorous training similar to doctors and have the flexibility to work in any specialty. This versatility allows PAs to move between specialties without requiring additional residency training, a feature that attracted Virginia to the profession. She hopes to educate others about the importance of PAs and advocate for increased recognition of their contributions to the medical field.

For those considering a similar path, Virginia’s advice is simple: don’t give up. The journey to PA school, or any professional goal, is rarely straightforward, and perseverance is key. She encourages aspiring medical professionals to gain diverse experiences, explore different career paths, and remain open to learning. She also stresses the importance of building strong connections along the way—whether with mentors, peers, or lifelong friends—because support networks play a crucial role in achieving success.

Virginia’s story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to service. From her early days as a student-athlete and community leader in Pahrump to her upcoming journey in PA school, she embodies the values of hard work and giving back. Her experiences in education, healthcare, and athletics have all played a role in shaping her into the driven and compassionate professional she is today. No matter where her career takes her, one thing is certain—Virginia Weir is determined to make a difference.
