The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ soccer team hit the road on Monday, September 15, to take on the Meadows Mustangs. In a competitive match that saw both sides create opportunities, the Trojans ultimately came up short in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
The first half was a defensive showcase, with goalkeeper Cayden Cowley and the back line keeping the Mustangs off the scoreboard. At the 26-minute mark, the Trojans earned a corner kick but were unable to convert, while Cowley continued to clear away pressure with timely saves, including a kick that sent the ball deep downfield. The Trojans had a promising drive at the 15-minute mark when a shot bounced off the keeper, but no one was in position to finish the rebound. Pahrump kept pushing, including a late shot from just inside the box, and the half ended scoreless at 0-0.

In the second half, Meadows continued to test the Trojan defense, but Cowley came up strong again, blocking a penalty kick at the 26-minute mark and batting away a long-range attempt minutes earlier. The breakthrough for the Mustangs came in the 17th minute when a redirected shot slipped past Cowley, giving Meadows the lone goal of the match. The Trojans continued to press forward with chances of their own, including a late shot from the right corner that drew shouts for a potential handball, but no call was made. The final minutes grew tense after a hard challenge left senior forward TC shaken up. A red card followed after an exchange on the field, forcing the Trojans to finish the game a man down. The Mustangs held on to secure the 1-0 victory.

After the game, Head Coach Andrew Norton credited his goalkeeper and senior leaders despite the tough loss. “Cayden played outstanding tonight,” Norton said. “He had quite a few excellent saves, and I think if it weren’t for that deflection on their goal, he would have stopped it too. TC showed his tenacity on offense, and Xavier was strong on defense. If the rest of the team can match that intensity, we’ll be in good shape.”
The Trojans now turn their attention to their upcoming matchup against Virgin Valley, a game Coach Norton described as one of the toughest of the season, especially with the team missing a key player due to the red card.
