The Pahrump Valley High School JV girls’ basketball team (Trojans) kicked off their season on December 3 with a challenging game against the Arbor View Aggies, ultimately falling 36-22. While the loss highlighted areas for improvement, it also revealed the team’s resilience and determination to grow.
Leading the way offensively was Ella Odegard, who scored 10 points, despite struggling at the free-throw line. Head JV Coach Darla Sheppard acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of the experience.
“This was our first game of the season, and it showed us exactly what we need to work on,” Sheppard said. “The girls gave it everything they had, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
With a roster composed largely of freshmen, the young team is in the early stages of developing their chemistry and finding their rhythm. Defensive efforts stood out, particularly those of Aurora Bowers and Autumn Colon. “Aurora’s defense was a real bright spot; she hustled and kept fighting,” Sheppard noted. “Autumn also impressed me with her ability to hold her ground against tough opponents.”
The game wasn’t without its struggles. The Trojans were 6-for-32 from the free-throw line and committed numerous turnovers. However, Sheppard saw these as opportunities to grow. “The mistakes are part of the process,” she said. “What really stood out to me was their hustle. Even after making a mistake, they didn’t give up and hustled back, and that’s something you can’t teach—it’s just heart.”
The team’s grit was complemented by Sydney Crotty’s leadership on the court, which helped bring focus and stability to the game. Sheppard also noted the importance of making strategic adjustments moving forward, including potentially shifting some taller guards into post positions to strengthen the inside game.
“This game was an eye-opener for us,” Sheppard said. “It showed us where we need to focus, but it also showed us that these girls are willing to work hard and keep fighting. That’s the kind of attitude that will help us improve as the season goes on.”
The Trojans have their next game scheduled for next week, where they’ll look to apply lessons learned and continue their development as a team. With a blend of young talent and a determined mindset, the season holds promise for growth and improvement.
