Nye County Schools Enhance Athletic Facilities with New Gym Floors

The Nye County School District recently completed a significant project to install new gym floors at several schools in the district, including JG Johnson, RCMS, Pathways, PVHS as well as Round Mountain, Tonopah High, Tonopah Elementary and Beatty High. The initiative was driven by these floors being beyond repair through routine maintenance capabilities.

Joseph Schmidt, Director of Maintenance & Operations for the district, explained the reasoning behind the project: “Our gym floors were showing their age, striping was faded and scratched, and the top coats were worn beyond what routine maintenance could overcome.” Recognizing the necessity for a safe and conducive environment for students, the Nye County School District Board of Trustees approved the project in two stages. The Round Mountain gym floor was approved during the June 15, 2023, meeting, followed by approval for the other seven sites during the July 20, 2023, meeting.

While the district advertises locally and aims to attract local bidders, no local companies presented for this project. Consequently, KYA was selected for the Round Mountain project, and FSI Specialty Products and Services were chosen for the remaining locations based on pricing and bidder responsiveness.

The financial aspects of the projects were managed by the district’s CFO, Ray Ritchie, and his team, while Mr. Schmidt’s department supervised the operational aspects. The maintenance and upkeep of the new floors are the responsibility of each school principal, with regular audits conducted by the Maintenance and Operations department.

Reflecting on the project, Mr. Schmidt emphasized the importance of well-maintained facilities for student success. “Every aspect of building maintenance directly relates to our mission. Student success is predicated on safety and an environment conducive to learning. Bright, clean, and well-maintained buildings and grounds demonstrate care for our students and staff. It provides a healthy environment, and it shows pride in our district,” he stated.

The new gym floors have not only improved the physical environment but also fostered a sense of community among students and staff. “I have talked to students and staff about this project in particular. Students, for the first time, are policing the new gym floors along with our staff. Street shoes and certain equipment are no longer allowed, and students and staff are working together to ensure our new floors are protected. This sense of community will ensure our new floors last and stay pristine for years to come,” Mr. Schmidt shared.

The longevity of the new floors is ensured through parts and materials warranties lasting between one and three years, which confirm proper installation. The actual durability, however, depends on the care and maintenance they receive. “With proper maintenance, this floor could last decades,” noted Mr. Schmidt.

The installation of new gym floors across several schools in the Nye County School District is a testament to the district’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for its students. Through the leadership of Mr. Schmidt and the cooperation of the entire school community, these new facilities will serve the district for many years.
