    Meet Assistant Superintendent Genoveva Lopez-Angelo

    A Passionate Leader Shaping the Future of Education

    Genoveva Lopez-Angelo has recently taken on the role of Assistant Superintendent at the Nye County School District, a position she has held for the past eight months. Her journey to this leadership role is a testament to her lifelong passion for learning and her dedication to making a meaningful impact on young minds.

    “My inspiration to pursue a career in education stems from a passion for learning and a desire to make a meaningful impact on young minds,” says Genoveva. From an early age, she found joy in discovering new concepts and sharing that knowledge with others, which naturally guided her toward a career in teaching. Starting as a PreK teacher, she has taught various grades from PreK through second grade and served as a reading specialist for K-5 students. Her aspiration to support the professional growth of fellow educators led her to transition from the classroom to an instructional leader role, where she focused on mentoring teachers, developing curriculum, and implementing effective instructional strategies to enhance student learning outcomes.

    Genoveva’s journey has now led her to the position of Assistant Superintendent, where she leverages her extensive background in education to impact the entire school district. “In this role, I am dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment, promoting innovative teaching practices, and ensuring that we are learning-focused,” she explains.

    Her primary goals for the school district are centered around effectively implementing the strategic plan. This involves fostering a learning-focused culture that enhances instructional practices and student outcomes. To achieve this, Genoveva focuses on three key areas: the implementation of essential standards, the use of Mastery Connect for assessment and data-driven instruction, and the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process.

    Genoveva and other NCSD employees participated in a roundtable with Congressman Steven Horsford and GBC to discuss educational needs in Nye County this spring. 

    “Firstly, ensuring the consistent implementation of essential standards across all grade levels will provide a clear and cohesive framework for what students need to learn,” Genoveva states. This approach helps maintain high expectations and supports educators in delivering targeted and effective instruction. “Secondly, Mastery Connect will enable us to use data more effectively to inform instruction. By regularly assessing student progress and understanding where each student stands, we can tailor teaching strategies to meet their individual needs and ensure that no student falls behind.”

    The PLC process is crucial for creating a collaborative environment where educators can share best practices, analyze student data, and develop strategies for continuous improvement. “By fostering a culture of collaboration and ongoing professional development, we can enhance the quality of teaching and learning throughout the district,” she emphasizes.

    A typical day for Genoveva as Assistant Superintendent is varied. It typically begins with reviewing and responding to emails to ensure timely communication with stakeholders. Throughout the day, she attends various scheduled meetings, which may include discussions with district leadership, principals, teachers, and community members. These meetings are essential for strategic planning, decision-making, and ensuring alignment with district goals.

    One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is engaging in professional development activities. “Whether facilitating workshops, collaborating with educators on curriculum development, or providing coaching and support, these opportunities allow me to directly impact the professional growth of our staff,” she shares. The enthusiasm for learning and dedication to improving student outcomes among the staff is incredibly fulfilling for Lopez-Angelo.

    In addition to her core responsibilities, she prioritizes regular check-ins with principals to provide guidance, support instructional leadership, and ensure consistency across schools. These interactions are crucial for fostering a collaborative culture and addressing specific needs at the school level.

    Engaging with students, parents, and the broader community is a key aspect of Lopez-Angelo’s approach to ensuring everyone is involved in the educational process. Attending school events allows her to connect directly with families and students, fostering a sense of community and demonstrating her support for their educational journey. Regular visits to schools are integral to understanding the day-to-day environment and needs of students and staff. During these visits, she spends time in classrooms, the lunchroom, and sometimes on the playground, engaging with students in their learning spaces and building rapport with staff.

    “Arriving during drop-off and dismissal times provides valuable opportunities to interact with parents, addressing any concerns and reinforcing our commitment to their children’s education,” she notes. These interactions are essential for building relationships and gathering feedback and insights that inform decision-making and improve educational outcomes.

    Outside of her professional life, Genoveva values spending time with her family, which includes her husband, children, and two grandsons. “Our time together helps me stay grounded and provides a strong support system, which is invaluable in balancing the demands of my role in education,” she shares. She also has a passion for reading and traveling, which enrich her life and contribute to her effectiveness as an educator and leader.

    Genoveva’s dedication to fostering a collaborative environment, promoting innovative teaching practices, and ensuring that the school district remains learning-focused is evident in her work. Her journey from a passionate teacher to an influential leader in education serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of commitment, collaboration, and continuous improvement in achieving educational excellence.
