As Carlee Barton reflects on her high school journey, one theme stands out above all: connections. “Meeting so many wonderful people” has been a highlight of her time at school. Carlee values the diversity of individuals she’s encountered, saying, “Everyone is different, and sometimes, all it takes is a simple ‘hello’ to make a new friend.” This openness to connection has not only shaped her high school experience but has also helped her grow as a person.
Carlee found a deep sense of purpose and growth in her involvement with the school’s theatre program. Serving as a Stage Manager multiple times and even stepping into the role of Technical Director, she learned invaluable lessons in leadership, professionalism, and patience. “Being in a position of leadership reinforced my work ethic and helped me understand the importance of being on time, every time,” she shares. Carlee balanced work and fun throughout her time in theatre, cherishing the sense of responsibility and the creative freedom the role afforded her.
A personal triumph that Carlee holds close is her venture into acting. Her first role as Mrs. Cratchit in a performance of A Christmas Carol was more than just a chance to be on stage—it was an opportunity to confront and conquer her fears. “It gave me the chance to defeat my biggest fear—being in front of others, and singing in front of others,” she recalls. This milestone led to another starring role in the mainstage performance The Beatles Slept Here by Craig Sodaro, where she played a high school senior, a fitting part for someone finishing her junior year. Six nights of performing in front of large audiences filled with friends, family, and strangers helped solidify her newfound confidence.
As graduation approaches, Carlee has her sights set on a career that allows her to inspire others just as she has been inspired. She plans to return to school with the goal of becoming a high school history teacher. Reflecting on the mentors and adults who have positively influenced her, Carlee says, “Because of these individuals, I’ve been able to find the career choice that I feel is right for me.” Her passion for history and her desire to make an impact in the lives of future students drives this decision.
To the underclassmen, Carlee offers advice that embodies the adventurous and fearless spirit she’s developed over the years: “If you have a club you’d like to join, or a class you want to try, go for it! Regardless of what happens, you’ll always have something to learn from it. Even if you think you won’t like it, just try it. Sometimes you’re met with a new hobby or skill that you’re really good at and can enjoy all at once! Don’t forget to breathe, you’ve got this.”
Carlee Barton’s high school experience has been one of self-discovery, growth, and forging connections. Her journey, from overcoming fears to embracing leadership roles, has prepared her for the next chapter with confidence and determination.
