Classrooms across Pahrump came back to life on Wednesday, Aug. 5, as students, teachers and staff officially kicked off the 2026-27 school year.
The first day marked the return of thousands of students throughout the district, with campuses once again filled with familiar faces, new friendships and the excitement that comes with the start of another academic year. For some students, it was their very first day of school, while others returned for milestone years that will shape the next chapter of their educational journey.
As families settle back into school routines, district officials are reminding parents, students and community members of several important initiatives and expectations that will help create a successful school year.
One of the most significant reminders is the district’s continued cell phone and personal smart device policy. Students are expected to keep cell phones and other personal electronic devices put away and out of sight during the instructional day unless specifically authorized by school staff for educational purposes. The policy is designed to reduce distractions, increase student engagement and create a more focused learning environment.
District leaders are also encouraging families to make school attendance a top priority. Regular attendance plays a critical role in student success, helping children stay on pace academically while building positive classroom habits and maintaining connections with their teachers and classmates. Families are encouraged to schedule appointments outside of school hours whenever possible and communicate with their child’s school if an absence is unavoidable.
Parents should also be aware that the Nye County School District has transitioned to a new districtwide communication platform this year, replacing ClassDojo. The new system will serve as the primary method for schools and teachers to share announcements, classroom updates and important information with families. Parents who have not yet activated their accounts are encouraged to do so to ensure they continue receiving timely school communications throughout the year.
With students once again traveling to and from school each day, motorists are also being asked to exercise extra caution, particularly during the morning and afternoon commute.
School buses begin their routes as early as 6 a.m. each weekday, picking up students across the valley before making multiple runs to serve elementary, middle and high school campuses. Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones, remain alert for children walking or bicycling to school and always stop when a school bus displays its flashing red lights and extended stop arm. Taking a few extra moments during the commute can help ensure every student arrives safely at school and returns home each afternoon.
Families should also take note of the daily school schedules.
Middle school students may arrive on campus beginning at 7 a.m. for breakfast, with classes starting at 7:30 a.m. Students are dismissed at 1:31 p.m.
At Pahrump Valley High School, classes begin at 8:10 a.m., with students dismissed at 2:35 p.m.
Elementary school campuses open their doors at 9 a.m., with the tardy bell ringing at 9:10 a.m. Dismissal is scheduled for 3:20 p.m.
As another school year gets underway, district leaders, educators and families share the same goal of helping every student succeed. By arriving on time, attending regularly, following school expectations and working together, students will be well positioned for a safe, productive and rewarding year in the classroom.
