The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ basketball team opened play at the Gator Winter Classic on Friday, December 26, facing a tough opponent from Winslow, Arizona, in a matchup that tested the Lady Trojans’ composure, defensive effort, and persistence. Hosted by Green Valley High School, the tournament brought together programs from across the region for a competitive holiday showcase.
Winslow struck first, scoring quickly and applying pressure early, but the Lady Trojans responded with energy on the defensive end. Riley Saldaña set the tone by forcing multiple jump balls and converting a layup in transition to get the Lady Trojans on the board. Despite Winslow’s half-court press creating challenges, Pahrump Valley stayed aggressive. Autumn Colon came up with a key steal and finish to give the Lady Trojans their first lead of the game, while the defense continued to contest shots and force turnovers.

In the second quarter, Winslow found rhythm from beyond the arc, but Pahrump Valley continued to battle. Kaitlyn Brown drew contact and converted at the free-throw line, and the Lady Trojans executed an inbound score to keep pace. Saldaña added points at the line and a timely block on the defensive end, highlighting her all-around effort. Even as Winslow extended the lead, Pahrump Valley’s man-to-man defense generated pressure and kept the Trojans engaged on every possession.
Coming out of halftime, the Lady Trojans showed determination to compete through adversity. Ella Odegard finished strong underneath early in the third quarter, and Colon added another steal as Pahrump continued to fight through full-court pressure. Brown knocked down a floater in the lane and later battled for her own rebound to earn another trip to the line, exemplifying the team’s hustle. The Trojans continued to attack the paint and push the ball forward despite Winslow’s press creating difficult situations.

The fourth quarter provided additional opportunities for growth and experience. Saldaña drew another shooting foul, Brown added a second floater in traffic, and Cindal Monahan checked into the game, gaining valuable tournament minutes. The Lady Trojans maintained their full-court defensive effort until the final buzzer, competing with intensity and supporting one another throughout the game.
While the final score, 56-20, favored Winslow, the opening contest of the Gator Winter Classic offered meaningful experience for Pahrump Valley against a physical, well-pressing opponent.
