The Pahrump Valley High School Cheer Team continued to build momentum in its return to competitive cheer, delivering another standout performance at the Shadow Ridge competition on Saturday, January 31. The Trojans earned a second-place finish in their division, posting a clean routine with zero deductions and finishing just 2.2 points behind first-place Somerset Sky Pointe.
Head Coach Marshira Nelson praised the team’s effort and growth throughout the season, noting that the athletes showcased significant improvements in areas they had worked diligently to refine since their previous competition.
“This weekend’s competition was really good. They did amazing,” Nelson said.
The Shadow Ridge event marked the second competition appearance of the season for the Trojans, and in both competitions, Pahrump Valley earned second place in its category—the division featuring the largest number of teams at each event. Competing in one of the most competitive brackets of the day, the Trojans consistently proved they could perform alongside some of the region’s strongest programs.

The division featured many of the same teams the Trojans faced in their previous competition, with the exception of Green Valley Christian. Despite the familiar field, Pahrump Valley continued to raise the bar for its own performance, earning improved feedback from judges and demonstrating clear progress in execution and overall presentation.

According to Nelson, the judges’ comments reflected the team’s commitment and dedication to improvement, while also offering valuable insight into areas where the program can continue to grow. That feedback will play an important role as the Trojans prepare for their final performance of the season, which will take place during Senior Night festivities on Friday, February 6.
Beyond the strong placement, the season carries added meaning for the program. This year marked Pahrump Valley’s return to the competitive cheer circuit after a 14-year hiatus. With the program stepping back into the competition world, coache Marshira and Assistant Coach Bonnie Duda made the decision to keep the schedule intentionally limited, allowing athletes to focus on rebuilding the foundation and gaining valuable experience.
Nelson described the season as both rewarding and emotional, highlighting the growth of the athletes and the pride felt by coaches and supporters alike.

The lessons learned throughout the season are already shaping the future of the program. Coaches plan to use the knowledge gained this year to continue strengthening routines, refining techniques, and expanding the competitive schedule in seasons to come.
“I feel like we learned a lot that we as coaches will make sure to improve next year,” Nelson added. “Now that we’ve dipped our toes, we will definitely be doing more than two competitions from here on out.”
As the Trojans prepare for Senior Night, the team looks forward to showcasing the routine that has earned praise from judges and fans alike while celebrating the seniors who have helped lead the program’s return to competition. The season may be nearing its conclusion, but the renewed energy and excitement surrounding PVHS Cheer signals a bright and spirited future for the program.
