The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ soccer team dominated their home field on Wednesday, September 18, with a decisive 4-0 victory against the Moapa Valley Pirates. After making adjustments to their formation, the Trojans found the rhythm they had been searching for, playing a cohesive and effective match.
Head Coach Andrew Norton explained the strategic shift that led to the win, noting that the team returned to their original formation after trying various setups following their third game this season. “We switched a lot for a few games and it didn’t prove successful,” Norton said. “So we went back to what was working.” This tactical change proved to be just what the Trojans needed.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard early when Caleb Sierra-Hudgens opened the game with a well-placed goal. Gabe Aguilar-Mendoza followed with a strong finish, extending the lead. Elijah Solis added a third goal, and to cap off the victory, Sierra-Hudgens found the net once more, solidifying his impact on the game with two goals.
The standout player of the match was Favyan Sida, a JV player who moved up to the varsity squad. Sida’s was a strong presence in the midfield the entire game. “We were lacking possession in the middle, and he provided that today,” Norton added.
Offensively, Gabe Aguilar-Mendoza delivered the physical presence the Trojans had been missing. His strength and positioning provided a large target for key players like TC Hone to connect with. On the defensive side, a new face stepped up in a big way. Ryan Nunez Manzo, starting as center back, embraced his new role for the benefit of the team. “He wasn’t super excited but said that’s what’s best for the team, and that’s the attitude we need. He put in the work and did great. Didn’t get beat all night,” Norton praised.
Looking ahead, the Trojans will face Boulder on Friday, a game Coach Norton expects to be challenging. “It’s going to be a tough game. We don’t really know what to expect based on their season, but we know it’s going to be a tough matchup. We’re going to lean heavy on subbing and keeping fresh legs,” he said.
With this strong win under their belt, the Trojans are preparing for their next challenge with determination and momentum.
