Facing off against a strong 5A opponent on the road, the Pahrump Valley High School varsity softball team put together a competitive and spirited performance against the Green Valley Gators on Tuesday, March 24, showcasing both resilience and the ability to answer back in key moments.
The Trojans wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. Aspen Middaugh sparked the offense with a single to right field, and Riley Saldaña followed with a sharp double to left, bringing Middaugh home for the game’s first run. Despite a few tough outs, Pahrump took an early 1-0 lead and set the tone against a higher-classified opponent.
In the circle, Jaycie Hayes matched that energy early, helping hold the Gators scoreless in the first inning. The defense backed her up with solid play, including clean fielding and timely outs to keep Green Valley off the board.
Both teams settled into a defensive rhythm over the next couple of innings. The Trojans continued to apply pressure in the second, with Sadie Freeman collecting a base hit and Dakota Glenn executing a sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position. Meanwhile, the Pahrump defense remained sharp, turning in multiple three-up, three-down innings to keep the game tight.
Green Valley broke through in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a base hit and an error to tie the game at 1-1. Even so, the Trojans continued to match the Gators’ intensity, with both teams trading strong defensive frames through the fourth inning.

Pahrump regained momentum in the top of the fifth with one of their strongest offensive sequences of the game. Dakota Glenn led off with a double to center, and with runners eventually loading the bases, Evalenne Armendariz delivered a sacrifice fly to bring Glenn home. Moments later, Madison Rodriguez added an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1, giving the Trojans a boost against the tough Green Valley lineup.
The Gators responded with a big inning in the bottom half, stringing together hits to take control of the game. Despite the shift in momentum, the Trojans continued to battle and refused to back down.
In the sixth inning, Pahrump showed its determination to rally. Jaelyn Rodriguez opened with a double, and after advancing to third, courtesy runner Myah Krolczyk came home on a well-executed bunt play by Dakota Glenn. The Trojans chipped away at the deficit, keeping the pressure on.
That fight carried into the seventh inning, where Evalenne Armendariz launched a home run to right field to lead things off. The Trojans added another run when Jaelyn Rodriguez drove in Madison Rodriguez with a single to center, closing the gap and continuing to challenge the Gators until the final outs.

Head Coach Brian Hayes praised his team’s effort against a tough opponent.
“We played a good competitive game,” Hayes said. “One bad inning was the difference. In all of our losses, we have played good teams who have capitalized on our mistakes. We need to be consistent for an entire game in order to be a state contender.”
Despite the 11-6 final, the Trojans showed they can compete with one of the top teams in a higher classification. With timely hitting, strong defensive stretches and continued resilience at the plate, Pahrump demonstrated the kind of effort that will serve them well as the season progresses.
