The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ volleyball team put together a strong and energetic performance at home on Friday, April 17, opening the match with a hard-fought first-set win before continuing to battle point-for-point with the Moapa Valley Pirates across four competitive sets.

Pahrump Valley found its rhythm early in the opening set after falling behind 0-3. The Trojans responded with a steady run, highlighted by strong serving from William Coen and a series of defensive stops at the net. A block and back-to-back errors from Moapa Valley helped swing momentum, giving the Trojans a 6-3 lead.

From there, Pahrump Valley leaned on a balanced attack. Andy Sanchez and James Wilson each delivered key spikes, while Elijah Thompson’s serving helped extend the lead. A well-placed attack to the back line and multiple plays that found open floor kept the Pirates on their heels as the Trojans pushed ahead 16-8.

Moapa Valley fought back late in the set, eventually tying things at 19-19, but Pahrump Valley stayed composed in the closing moments. Sanchez delivered a clutch off-balance kill, and the Trojans capitalized on key errors and a strong block at the net to regain control. With the score tight, Pahrump Valley sealed the set 25-23 on a well-placed attack that deflected off the Pirates’ defense.

In the second set, the Trojans again came out with energy. Coen’s serve set up an early point finished by Sanchez, and Alexander Mahoney contributed with smart placement shots, including a tip and a spike that forced errors. The teams traded points early, but Moapa Valley gradually built separation midway through the set. Despite continued effort from Sanchez and a strong defensive play from Nicholas Watson, the Pirates pulled away late to take the set 25-15.

Set three saw more of the same fight from Pahrump Valley. Sanchez mixed in both power and finesse, using well-placed tips to find open space, while Thompson added an ace to help even the score at 5-5 early. The Trojans battled through long rallies and extended points, including one sequence that kept the ball alive off multiple touches, drawing energy from the home crowd. Late points from Sanchez and a couple of Pirate errors helped close the gap, but Moapa Valley held on for a 25-17 win.

In the fourth set, Pahrump Valley continued to push. Sanchez delivered another ace and remained a consistent presence at the net, contributing both offensively and defensively with a key block that sparked loud cheers from the crowd. Tristan Whaley added a well-timed tip, and Thompson came through with a strong spike late in the set as the Trojans worked to close the gap.

The Trojans showed resilience down the stretch, capitalizing on Pirate errors and forcing tough plays at the net to make it a competitive finish. However, Moapa Valley was able to maintain its edge and close out the match with a 25-21 set win.

Despite the final result, Pahrump Valley showed strong effort throughout the match, highlighted by a decisive opening set victory, consistent contributions from Sanchez, and solid team play across the court. The Trojans’ ability to respond to momentum swings and stay competitive in extended rallies reflected a team continuing to grow and compete at a high level.
