The Pahrump Valley High School softball team showcased a complete and disciplined performance on their home field Tuesday, March 17, earning a 5-0 victory over Needles behind strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting.
With Evalenne Armendariz getting the start in the circle, the Trojans set the tone early with steady defensive play. Although Needles opened the game with a leadoff single to left field, Armendariz and the defense quickly settled in. A ground out to third, followed by a strikeout and a fly out to left, ended the inning without any damage.

Pahrump’s offense was quiet in the bottom of the first, going three up, three down with Aspen Middaugh flying out to left, Riley Saldaña striking out and Jaycie Hayes sending a fly ball to center.

Armendariz found her rhythm in the second inning, striking out the first two batters before a pop out to first baseman Jaelyn Rodriguez closed out another scoreless frame. The Trojans capitalized on their next opportunity at the plate.
Madison Rodriguez reached on a fly ball to left that resulted in an error, allowing her to advance to second. After a strikeout, Mariah Gray singled to left to put runners on base. With Jaelyn Rodriguez at the plate, Madison scored on a passed ball to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Jaelyn followed with a single to right, and Sadie Freeman reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. However, an offensive interference call and a strikeout ended the inning with Pahrump holding a narrow lead.
Armendariz continued to control the game in the third, recording two more strikeouts before a single slipped through to left. The inning ended on a pop out in foul territory to third baseman Mariah Gray.

The Trojans broke things open in the bottom half of the third with a string of productive at-bats. Middaugh led off with a well-placed bunt and reached first, setting the stage for Saldaña, who drove a triple to score the first run of the inning. Hayes followed with an RBI single to left, bringing Saldaña home.
After a fielder’s choice and a hit-by-pitch put more runners on, Gray and Rodriguez helped keep the inning alive, loading the bases. Freeman delivered a key single to right field, scoring two runs, and pushing the Trojans’ lead to 5-0 before the inning came to a close.
From there, both teams settled into a defensive battle. Armendariz continued to pitch effectively through the middle innings, and Hayes came in to relieve in the fifth, maintaining the shutout effort. The Trojans’ defense remained sharp throughout, preventing any late-game momentum from Needles.

With consistent pitching and clean defensive execution, Pahrump held firm through the final innings, securing the 5-0 victory as the game concluded after the top of the seventh.
Head Coach Brian Hayes praised the team’s approach and growth compared to previous seasons.
“It was a stark contrast from our high scoring and error prone games from last year,” Hayes said. “We won with pitching, defense and timely hitting.”
The win reflects a more balanced and composed Trojans squad, demonstrating their ability to control the game in all phases as they continue to build momentum early in the season.
