The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans JV boys’ basketball team put up a valiant fight against the SLAM Bulls at home on Wednesday, December 11, ultimately falling short in a nail-biting 54-53 loss. Despite the defeat, the game showcased the team’s effort and improvement early this season.
The Trojans started slow, trailing 25-14 at the end of the first quarter. However, their determination became evident as they chipped away at SLAM’s lead. Lucas Gavenda led the scoring effort early on, contributing several key baskets underneath the rim. Trae Plein also showed his strength in the paint, keeping the Trojans within reach as SLAM maintained a relentless full-court press.
By halftime, the Trojans had narrowed the gap to 32-28. Head Coach Jason Toth praised the team’s response after their sluggish start, saying, “Their intensity when things got a little chippy on the court was outstanding. They refocused, kept their heads on straight, and executed our game plan.”
The third quarter saw the Trojans surge ahead briefly, with Gavenda scoring in the paint to give the team a 33-32 lead. Jack Toth made his presence known with a clutch three-pointer and several key baskets, while TC Hone contributed crucial points in the paint. Despite their efforts, turnovers and SLAM’s aggressive press allowed the Bulls to reclaim the lead, ending the third quarter with a 48-42 advantage.
In the final quarter, the Trojans displayed tenacity, with Gavenda continuing to dominate the boards and scoring on multiple put-backs. Plein’s aggressive play and smart decision-making throughout the game earned him recognition from Coach Toth, who said, “Trae was the big one tonight. He was very aggressive and made smart decisions. Even when he fouled out, he kept his cool, which is a testament to his mental toughness.”
A late-game steal by Gavenda led to a critical layup, cutting the deficit to 54-53 with seconds remaining. The Trojans forced a turnover and called a timeout, setting up a final attempt to clinch the victory. However, the buzzer sounded before their last shot attempt, leaving the team just one point shy.
Reflecting on the game, Coach Toth highlighted the positives. “Lucas had a really good game; he’s gaining more confidence. Trae surprised us all with his aggression and decision-making. Wins and losses matter, but seeing their basketball IQ grow and their smiles after the game is what it’s all about.”
Looking ahead, Coach Toth emphasized the need to work on fundamentals, particularly with the team’s bigs. “We’re focusing on teaching proper post moves and screening for each other. These are the building blocks that will benefit them in the long run.”
Despite the loss, the Trojans showcased their resilience and potential. With their growth mindset and determination, the future looks bright for the JV squad. The team will regroup and aim to bounce back stronger in their next outing.
