The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ basketball team traveled to Las Vegas on December 6 to take on the Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas – Sandy Ridge (CASLV) Falcons in a game full of energy, grit, and key moments. Despite a strong effort, the Trojans fell short in a 50-40 loss, showcasing their potential while identifying areas for growth.
The game began with Tramaine Burras putting the Trojans on the board first with an inside shot, but CASLV quickly countered with a three-pointer, setting the tone for a back-and-forth contest. Burras, Alejandro Lozano, and Antwahn Jackson led the Trojans’ offense in the first half, keeping the game within reach. Lozano’s ability to draw fouls and convert free throws helped Pahrump stay competitive, while Jackson added key points in the paint. The first half ended with CASLV leading 19-16.
The third quarter saw the Trojans ramp up their intensity. Key plays by Lozano, Jack Toth, and Keir Sheppard brought the team back from an eight-point deficit to tie the game at 35-35. Toth, who stepped up with a clutch three-pointer and a layup, proved instrumental in the comeback effort. Sheppard contributed on both ends, converting on an inside shot while hustling on defense to limit CASLV’s opportunities.
However, CASLV’s sharp shooting from beyond the arc proved to be the deciding factor. The Falcons capitalized on critical possessions late in the game, including multiple three-pointers and strong finishes under the basket. Despite the Trojans’ tenacity, CASLV extended their lead in the final minutes to secure the win, 50-40.
Post-game, Trojans Head Coach Braydon Preston reflected on the highs and lows of the match. “It was a really hard-fought game,” Preston said. “We’re finding our little pieces that match together and working well as a team. But we’ve got to box out, take care of the basketball, and stay under control.”
Turnovers were a challenge for the Trojans, as Coach Preston emphasized the importance of maintaining control. “I like them getting the ball up the floor as fast as possible, but it’s got to be under control,” he explained. “Burras is getting better at it than he was in the first game, which is encouraging.”
Defensively, the Trojans’ zone strategy, a staple this season, showed improvement. Looking ahead, the Trojans face a busy week with three home games against Cadence, SLAM Academy and Moapa Valley. Preston expressed optimism about the team’s progress but acknowledged the challenges of limited practice time. “We’ve got to beat all three of them, so we’ll focus on defense, ball handling, and staying under control,” he said. “However it’s hard to plan effectively with only two days of practice.”
Preston also gave special recognition to Josh Slusher for his impactful performance off the bench. “He came in at an important time and picked up the pieces when we needed it most,” Preston said.
Despite the outcome, the Trojans demonstrated heart, effort, and significant growth throughout the game. With their determination and an improving roster, the team looks poised to make their mark as the season progresses. Fans can support the Trojans during next week’s games as they defend their home court and work to bounce back.
