The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ Varsity basketball team took to their home court on January 18 to face the Legacy High School Longhorns in a game that tested their mettle. While the Longhorns ultimately claimed an 81-36 victory, the Trojans left it all on the court, showing their fighting spirit throughout the matchup.
The game tipped off with Aydon Veloz winning possession for the Trojans, but Legacy quickly made their presence known with aggressive defense and precision shooting. The Longhorns’ relentless full-court press created early turnovers, leading to a quick 10-0 run that forced a timeout by Pahrump. Despite the early deficit, the Trojans regrouped and began to find their rhythm.
Keir Sheppard sparked the offense with back-to-back baskets in the first quarter, driving through the defense for key points. Jack Toth followed with a rebound and putback that brought energy to the team. Late in the quarter, Caden Briscoe connected with Lucas Gavenda for a layup, and Gavenda later added a three-pointer, helping the Trojans close the period at 12-30.
In the second quarter, the Trojans made adjustments and started to find more success offensively. Veloz delivered a sharp pass to Toth for an inside shot, and Gavenda continued to be a bright spot, scoring off assists and pulling down rebounds. The Trojans’ defensive effort picked up as well, with players hustling to contest shots and disrupt Legacy’s offensive flow. Despite their best efforts, the Longhorns extended their lead with a series of fast breaks and perimeter shots, heading into halftime with a 50-26 advantage.
The third quarter brought more challenges as Legacy’s press remained unrelenting. The Trojans struggled to move the ball upcourt against the pressure, but they kept looking for opportunities. Sheppard drained a three-pointer, and Slusher added a basket inside to give the Trojans some momentum. However, Legacy’s consistent scoring and quick transitions widened the gap.
In the final quarter, the Trojans dug deep to finish strong. Gavenda added a layup, and Toth powered through contact for a crucial three-point play. Even as foul trouble sidelined Veloz, the Trojans continued to push forward. Legacy’s fast-paced offense, including a late dunk, capped off their scoring, but the Trojans’ effort never waned.
Despite the loss, the game highlighted key contributors for the Trojans. Gavenda’s scoring, including two three-pointers, stood out, while Toth and Sheppard made significant plays on both ends of the floor. The Trojans displayed moments of cohesion and perseverance that will serve them well as they move forward in the season.
The Trojans’ next matchup offers another opportunity to build on their experience and refine their strategy. With continued focus and teamwork, this team has the tools to compete at a high level.
