Pahrump Valley High School junior Sunday Colon has been presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: she has been selected to represent the United States in an international softball tournament in Italy through the American Baseball Softball Association (ABSA). Out of millions of athletes nationwide, Sunday was chosen as one of just twelve players to travel abroad, marking an incredible milestone in her softball journey.

Sunday, a dedicated athlete who has been playing softball practically her entire life, will embark on this trip next year, from July 10 through 20. The adventure begins in Venice, where the team will experience guided tours, don travel shirts, and enjoy a gondola ride while exploring the city’s historic canals. From there, they will travel to Verona to take in some of Italy’s best-preserved Roman ruins and medieval architecture before heading to Parma for the centerpiece of the trip: a three-day international softball tournament. During the competition, Sunday and her teammates will participate in opening and closing ceremonies, practice together as a team, and represent the United States on an international stage. The trip concludes in Rome, where the group will visit iconic landmarks, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Michelangelo’s Statue of David, blending athletic competition with rich cultural experiences.
On the field, Sunday is a versatile player, serving as a catcher and utility player capable of contributing in the outfield and middle infield. She has played nearly every position except first base and pitcher, showcasing both her talent and adaptability. Her selection to the ABSA team came through Coach Flanagan, who reached out to her after reviewing recruitment applications, confirming her status as one of the nation’s elite young players.

While the opportunity is thrilling, participating in such a journey comes with significant financial responsibilities. The total cost per participant is estimated to be around $4,000, covering travel, accommodations, meals, and tournament fees. As a minor, Sunday requires an accompanying adult, and her travel deposit has already been generously covered by her boyfriend’s aunt. She and her family are now seeking sponsorships and donations to cover the remaining expenses, including potential opportunities for local businesses to have their logos featured as part of her attire. Sunday hopes to have all funds gathered by February to ensure ample preparation time, with the final payment due in May.
To complement fundraising efforts, Sunday plans to participate in community events such as car washes alongside her high school teammates, and she has established two online fundraising accounts to reach supporters more broadly. Donations can be given here or here. All donations are greatly appreciated. The team she will join in Italy includes players from across the United States, offering a unique chance for her to meet and bond with fellow athletes from Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and beyond.
This trip is more than a softball tournament; it is a combination of cultural exploration, personal growth, and athletic achievement that Sunday is eager to experience. Her selection to represent the United States is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. With the support of her community, Sunday Colon is poised to make the most of this extraordinary international adventure, carrying both the spirit of Pahrump and the pride of her country to Italy.
