The culinary classroom at Pahrump Valley High School was transformed into an elegant dining venue on Wednesday, March 4, as students in the school’s culinary program hosted the first “Savoring Senior Year” dining experience of the year. The special evening offered guests a chance to enjoy a thoughtfully prepared five-course meal complete with handcrafted mocktails, attentive table service, and a French-inspired atmosphere designed and executed entirely by students.
Every table in the room was filled as community members, families, and supporters gathered to experience the unique event. From the décor to the pacing of the courses, the evening reflected the planning, creativity, and teamwork that the culinary students had spent weeks preparing.
Leading the kitchen for the night was Executive Chef Emalee York, assisted by Sous Chef Hailee Burns, while Bree Smiley oversaw the front-of-house operations as House Manager. Together with their classmates, the trio coordinated the many moving parts required to run a full-service dining experience.

Guests were treated to a multi-course menu inspired by classic French cuisine. The evening began with a refreshing mocktail to set the tone before diners were served a carefully crafted progression of courses, each plated with attention to detail and presented by student servers. The menu highlighted a variety of techniques and flavors that the culinary students have developed through their training in the program.

Throughout the evening, the dining room carried a fine-dining theme, from the table settings to the presentation of the dishes. The atmosphere reflected the professionalism and pride the students brought to the event, as they moved seamlessly between the kitchen and dining room to ensure every guest enjoyed the experience.
For York, the event marked both a celebration and a milestone as she prepares to close out her time in the program.
“It’s bittersweet that it’s over, but I’m glad I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of culinary the last few years and do events like these,” York said. “This wouldn’t have been possible without chef’s support and the help I had from my fellow students. Thank you all for everything.”
Culinary instructor Chef Jones said the evening showcased not only the students’ technical abilities but also their growth as leaders and teammates.
“Seeing these students plan and execute an event like this is something every teacher hopes for,” Jones said. “I’m incredibly proud of Emalee and the entire team who made it possible. Watching them grow into confident leaders in the kitchen, the dining room, and the classroom has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”
Jones emphasized that the program goes far beyond teaching recipes or cooking techniques.
“They’re not just learning culinary skills, they’re building confidence, teamwork, professionalism, perseverance, and resilience,” she added. “This program is supported by an incredible community, and we never take that for granted. Being able to bring people together around food and celebrate these students is really special.”

She also noted how meaningful it is to see the community support the program and its students.
“I only wish they could see themselves the way I see them, and I hope their families know just how remarkable they truly are,” Jones said.
Wednesday’s event marked the first “Savoring Senior Year” dining experience of the school year, with additional evenings planned in the coming months. Each event provides students with a real-world opportunity to manage every aspect of a professional dining service—from menu development and food preparation to customer service and event coordination.
For those in attendance, the evening offered more than just a meal. It provided a glimpse into the dedication, talent, and teamwork developing inside the PVHS culinary program—and a memorable dining experience created entirely by the next generation of culinary professionals.
