Pahrump Jazzers Build Strength, Flexibility, and Community Through Dance-Fitness

What began as a search for familiarity in a new town quickly blossomed into a thriving fitness community for Susanne Vaughn and Tina Randles, the duo behind Jazzercise Pahrump. Since opening their doors in January 2022, the two instructors have built not only a fitness program tailored for every age and ability but also a close-knit support system for locals looking to move, sweat, and connect.

Susanne Vaughn, the owner of Jazzercise Pahrump, brought with her decades of experience when she relocated to town in August 2021. She has been a certified Jazzercise instructor three different times—first in 1990, then again in 2001, and most recently in 2017—and brings more than 29 years of teaching experience to the studio. Missing the rhythm and structure of Jazzercise in her own life, she made the bold decision to start teaching classes again, bringing the iconic workout program to Pahrump. Not long after, Tina Randles—new to town and intrigued by a Jazzercise sign—joined a class. Almost immediately, she was invited to pursue her own instructor certification, which she completed just over a year ago.

As certified Fit Pros through Jazzercise, both women have undergone comprehensive training that covers physiology, movement, CPR, and how to structure balanced workouts. “We go through how to understand muscles and bones, how to build routines that support cardiovascular health and strength training—and most importantly, how to modify everything based on the individual,” Tina explained. That customization is at the heart of their approach: a workout that meets every person where they are.

Jazzercise itself blends dance with strength training and stretch, combining fun with function. “It’s the first, the favorite, and the future of fitness,” Susanne said proudly. “You don’t have to be a dancer. We tell you the moves and the muscles we’re working, and the hour just flies by.” Tina added, “You don’t even realize you’re working out because you’re having so much fun.”

Despite its upbeat energy, the program is firmly grounded in science and safety. Using weights, resistance bands, balance balls, and mats, Jazzercise Pahrump offers a full-body workout each session. The workouts are choreographed to music and are regularly updated by Jazzercise’s headquarters, keeping routines fresh and challenging. Started in 1969 by Judy Sheppard Missett—who still teaches at age 80—the Jazzercise brand remains a family affair, now led by her daughter Shanna Missett Nelson and granddaughter, who is also certified.

Although comparisons to Zumba often arise, Susanne noted a key difference: Jazzercise is deeply instructional. “We don’t just dance; we teach. We watch our students. We provide real-time modifications to meet a student’s abilities.”

All classes at the Pahrump studio are low impact due to the concrete slab flooring, which can be hard on joints during high-impact routines. Still, classes remain effective, engaging, and adjustable for everyone. The studio currently offers nine classes each week, including two chair-based sculpt classes (held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.), a Monday stretch class at 10 a.m., and multiple cardio or HIIT sessions. HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, combines 40 minutes of focused cardio with recovery-based strength segments to push participants to 80% of their capacity safely.

Age is no barrier at Jazzercise Pahrump. Their youngest participant is 12, and their oldest is 80. The inclusive atmosphere is a key part of their mission. Whether someone is a seasoned exerciser or returning to fitness after a break—or even recovering from medical challenges—Susanne and Tina welcome all with open arms. “We’ve had people recovering from strokes, people with MS, or even recovering from surgery. Everyone modifies. You do what you can. We’re here to help you succeed,” Susanne said.

To encourage newcomers, Jazzercise Pahrump offers a no-strings-attached trial: two weeks of unlimited classes for $59. Starting May 19, they’ll kick off a summer sale, offering 25% off the first month of unlimited classes, bringing the monthly rate down from $89 to around $67. For those ready to commit longer-term, an ongoing $89/month plan requires a three-month minimum but includes unlimited classes. Others may choose to purchase class packs with more flexible expiration dates. Tina encourages anyone who’s curious to just give it a shot: “Your first class is always free! Come by and give it a try.”

Class times are designed to accommodate different schedules. Morning classes are offered Monday through Friday at 9 a.m., with additional 10 a.m. offerings on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Evening classes take place at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Sculpt and stretch classes are strategically placed to meet diverse needs—sculpt classes focusing on stability and strength, and the stretch class helping participants lengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and regain balance.

The studio’s approachability also extends to attire and gear. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, flexible clothing and athletic shoes—though Susanne cautions against running shoes, which aren’t ideal for the lateral movement incorporated in routines. “Cross trainers, aerobic shoes, or studio shoes are best, as they are lighter weight,” she advised.

While launching the business presented its challenges—most notably securing a suitable location and gaining publicity—community support has helped Jazzercise Pahrump thrive. Originally held in Donna’s Studio of Dance, the classes quickly outgrew that space. The Methodist Church’s fellowship hall, located at the corner of Pahrump Valley Blvd and 372 (1300 E NV 372) soon became their new home, offering room to grow and a welcoming environment.

More than just a fitness class, Jazzercise Pahrump has evolved into a community. “We have this amazing group of supportive women and men,” Susanne said. “After sculpt class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we all stick around for coffee or tea—hot or iced, depending on the season. We celebrate milestones together, we lift each other up.”

For Tina, who moved to Pahrump knowing only her in-laws and a friend, the transformation has been profound. “Now I have a whole community,” she said with a smile. “We call ourselves the Pahrump Jazzers,” Susanne added.

With a growing membership base, an inviting class structure, and a mission rooted in inclusivity, Jazzercise Pahrump is more than a workout—it’s a place where bodies strengthen, minds unwind, and friendships flourish.
