The Pahrump Valley High School Lady Trojans continued their strong postseason run Friday, May 15, battling through a tense defensive showdown to defeat the Virgin Valley Bulldogs 2-0 in the second game of the State Tournament.
The victory carried extra meaning for Pahrump Valley, as the Bulldogs had previously handed the Lady Trojans a loss during the regional tournament resulting in a runner-up title. This time, however, the Trojans responded with one of their grittiest performances of the season, combining clutch defense, timely hitting and another dominant outing from freshman pitcher Jaycie Hayes to earn the shutout win.
Both teams opened the game trading scoreless innings as pitching and defense controlled the early momentum. Virgin Valley pitcher Kamzlee Dalton worked through the top of the first with a pair of strikeouts before Hayes answered in the bottom half by escaping early pressure.
Virgin Valley threatened in the first after a single and an error put two runners aboard with one out, but the Lady Trojans came up with key defensive plays to keep the game scoreless. Jaelyn Rodriguez handled a sharp lineout at first base before Hayes finished the inning with a swinging strikeout.

The Lady Trojans continued battling through long at-bats in the second inning. Evalenne Armendariz lifted a pop up to short while Mariah Gray struck out swinging, but Rodriguez worked a patient walk to put a runner aboard before the inning ended.
Hayes settled into rhythm in the bottom of the second, retiring the Bulldogs in order with two strikeouts and a groundout fielded cleanly by Olivia Veloz and Rodriguez on the right side of the infield.
The third inning brought one of the Bulldogs’ best scoring opportunities of the game. A leadoff double and a bunt that resulted in an error quickly placed runners on second and third with nobody out. However, the Lady Trojans responded with composure under pressure.
After a pop out to Veloz at second, Hayes issued a walk to load the bases, but the Lady Trojans came up with perhaps the defensive play of the game moments later. Aspen Middaugh fielded a ground ball at shortstop and fired home to Gray, who applied the tag at the plate to cut down the potential go-ahead run. Hayes then ended the threat with another strikeout to preserve the scoreless tie.

Armendariz helped spark the offense in the fourth inning with a two-out double to left field, but the Bulldogs escaped the inning without damage. Hayes continued dominating in the circle during the bottom half, striking out all three batters she faced.
Pahrump Valley finally broke through in the top of the fifth.
Jaelyn Rodriguez opened the inning with a single to right field before Isabella McHugh entered as a pinch runner. Madison Rodriguez moved McHugh into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and after a strikeout left two outs on the board, Sadie Freeman delivered the biggest hit of the game to that point.

Freeman lined a single into center field, allowing McHugh to race home with the game’s first run. Freeman aggressively advanced to second on the throw, giving the Lady Trojans a 1-0 advantage.
Virgin Valley immediately mounted another serious threat in the bottom of the inning. A single, stolen base, double and intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. But once again, the Lady Trojans’ defense rose to the moment.
Armendariz recorded a huge pop out in foul territory at third base for the second out before the Lady Trojans ended the inning in dramatic fashion. As Virgin Valley attempted to steal home, Armendariz fired to Gray behind the plate, where the Trojans completed the tag to end the inning and maintain the one-run lead.

The sixth inning moved quickly as Hayes continued to control the game from the circle. She struck out another batter in the bottom half while Claudia Lopez secured two fly balls in left field to help keep Virgin Valley off the scoreboard.
Pahrump Valley added an important insurance run in the seventh.
Gray started the inning with a hard-hit single, and courtesy runner Tierra Demers later advanced to third. With two outs, Quinn Kaucky came through with a clutch pinch-hit triple to left field, driving in Demers to extend the Lady Trojans’ lead to 2-0.

That extra run gave Hayes a little breathing room entering the final inning, and the Trojan ace finished the job in dominant fashion.
After a bunt groundout to begin the bottom of the seventh, Hayes struck out the final two batters of the game to seal the shutout victory and complete the redemption win over the Bulldogs.
Hayes was outstanding throughout the complete-game effort, allowing just four hits while striking out 11 batters. She repeatedly escaped pressure situations and delivered several key strikeouts with runners on base.
Offensively, the Lady Trojans collected five hits in the victory. Armendariz led the way with a double, Freeman delivered the game-winning RBI single, and Quinn added the late RBI triple. Rodriguez and Gray also contributed hits as Pahrump Valley continued to find timely offense when it mattered most.
Defensively, the Lady Trojans came up with multiple momentum-shifting plays, including the force out at home in the third inning and the caught stealing at home in the fifth, both helping preserve the shutout in one of the team’s toughest and most complete postseason performances of the year.
