Larry Small, a dedicated leader and advocate for education, has been recognized with the prestigious Veteran School Board Member of the Year Award by the Nevada Association of School Boards (NASB). This honor celebrates his exceptional service and unwavering commitment to the Nye County School District, the largest geographic school district in the contiguous United States.

For the past eight years, Small has been a pillar of leadership within the Nye County School District, holding multiple terms as President, Vice President, and Clerk of the Board. His leadership is characterized by collaboration, a strong work ethic, and a genuine passion for the success of students across the district’s vast and diverse communities.

Small’s dedication extends far beyond the boardroom. He makes a point of attending all six high school graduations each year to celebrate students’ achievements, as well as school open houses and parent nights, showing his engagement with families, staff, and the community. Small dedicates approximately 20 hours weekly to school board activities, including committee work and preparation for meetings, a testament to his deep investment in education.

Reflecting on the honor, Small shared, “This award is a recognition from the NASB nomination committee, with support from our district, for my service as a senior member of the school board and a veteran trustee. It means so much to me to be acknowledged by all 17 districts in Nevada. I am incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished and look forward to continuing to serve the students and families of Nye County.”

Mike Walker, President of NASB and Larry Small

Beyond his work in education, Small and his wife of over 50 years have opened their hearts and home to foster more than 70 children, adopting nine. His background as a general manager for over four decades has equipped him with valuable insights and practical solutions that he brings to the school board.

Small’s impact on the Nye County School District and the broader community is profound. His efforts to promote a positive image of the district, ensure equal opportunities for all students, and foster a spirit of collaboration have made him a deserving recipient of this honor.

The NASB Veteran School Board Member of the Year Award not only recognizes Small’s achievements but also celebrates his ongoing commitment to making a meaningful difference in education and the lives of students throughout Nye County.
