Fifteen Years of Great Computer Deals in Pahrump

When Josh Osborne opened the doors of Great Computer Deals in the fall of 2010, he brought with him not just a background in technology, but decades of experience and a passion for helping people understand the ever-changing world of computers. Today, nearly fifteen years later and after multiple expansions, his business has become a cornerstone of the Pahrump community—a place where residents know they can find quality technology and, more importantly, personalized support.

Josh’s journey into the world of computers started much earlier than most. Homeschooled as a teenager, he gravitated toward computer science instead of traditional sciences, developing skills in web design, graphic design, and computer repair. His family shared the entrepreneurial spirit, running a business together that specialized in software designed for homeschool families. They created lesson planners, placement tests, and even secure browsers that allowed children to safely explore the internet. To share these products, the family spent six or seven months each year traveling to homeschool conventions across the country—from California to Pennsylvania to Florida—selling computers, teaching seminars, and introducing parents to the “new thing” called the internet.

By the time his family invested in property in Pahrump, Josh was already accustomed to a busy schedule of conventions and travel. At first, he wasn’t eager to commit to more work at home. When a friend suggested he try selling computers at the local swap meet, he hesitated. “I thought, no way—I travel seven months out of the year. When I’m home, I want to relax,” Josh recalled. But curiosity won out, and he eventually set up a display with 15 or 20 computers running at once. The first weekend he sold only one system, but instead of giving up, he came back. Week after week, his sales grew. By Christmas, he was selling 10 to 15 systems each weekend, and unlike most retailers, sales didn’t dip after the holidays—they increased. That was the sign Pahrump needed more than just a swap meet option. Residents wanted a local, reliable computer store, and Josh was ready to build it. The swap meet experiment became the foundation of Great Computer Deals, which has since thrived for nearly a decade and a half.

Inside the store today, customers will find far more than computers. Great Computer Deals sells everything from cables and printers to gaming systems and accessories, carefully selecting items that truly fit the needs of Pahrump. “Customers are the boss,” Josh explained. “If people ask for something often enough, we’ll carry it.” His focus has always been on quality, and that’s what sets his store apart. Instead of cheap consumer-grade computers—often plastic, fragile, and impossible to repair—Josh specializes in renewed corporate-grade systems. These are the kinds of machines once used in hospitals, police departments, and Fortune 500 companies. When businesses lease them for a few years, they return in excellent condition, ready for a second life. Josh’s team thoroughly tests every unit, replaces hard drives to ensure no leftover data, and sells them at a fraction of the original cost. The result is a reliable, name-brand computer backed by a local warranty and support team that customers can actually talk to face-to-face.

That human touch is a major part of Great Computer Deals’ philosophy. “If you buy a computer at a big-box store and it breaks, they give you a toll-free number and you end up talking to someone overseas,” Josh said. “Here, you come back to us. You talk to a real person in your hometown who will fix it.” That approach resonates with Pahrump’s senior population, many of whom didn’t grow up with computers and often feel overwhelmed by technical jargon. Josh and his staff intentionally avoid “tech speak” when working with customers. “We explain concepts in plain language,” he said. “We want people to feel comfortable and empowered, not intimidated.”

Part of that empowerment comes through their Rent-A-Tech service. In the store’s early days, Josh held computer classes, but he found that people often needed help right away, not at the next scheduled session. Rent-A-Tech solved that problem. Customers can bring in their device any time during business hours and work one-on-one with a technician. Whether it’s a quick 10-minute question or a full hour of training, the goal isn’t just fixing the issue—it’s teaching the customer how to handle it themselves in the future. “I don’t care if they take notes or even record us on their phone,” Josh said. “We want them to leave knowing exactly what to do next time.”

Another major service customers really appreciate is data migration. For seniors especially, the idea of switching to a new computer can be daunting. Great Computer Deals offers two solutions: cloning, which copies everything from an old machine onto the new one, or a data transfer, which moves only personal files like photos and documents. Either way, customers can transition smoothly without losing the digital history they depend on.

While the store focuses primarily on computers and related products, one area Josh has intentionally stepped away from is cell phone and tablet repair. Modern phones are designed to be difficult to repair, often requiring manufacturer service centers. For a small-town shop, the risk and complexity outweighed the benefit. “We decided to focus on what we do really well—computers, laptops, and desktops,” Josh explained.

But one of the most important roles Great Computer Deals plays in the community isn’t about selling hardware at all—it’s about protecting customers from scams. Josh has become a vocal advocate for digital safety, especially for seniors, who are frequently targeted. He educates customers on the red flags: pressure to act immediately, unsolicited phone calls, pop-ups claiming to be from Microsoft or antivirus companies, or emails threatening dire consequences unless personal information is shared. “The truth is, most people who think they’ve been hacked haven’t been hacked,” he explained. “They’re being lied to.” He recounted heartbreaking stories of locals losing thousands of dollars to scams, including one elderly man who tragically took his own life after falling victim to blackmail. For Josh, these aren’t just cautionary tales—they’re reminders of how critical it is to educate and support people before they act out of fear.

To prevent such tragedies, Josh and his team encourage everyone to follow a simple rule: don’t act immediately. “Delete the email, close the pop-up, hang up the phone. Then contact us or call the company directly through a number you know is legitimate,” he said. He also emphasizes the importance of backups—what he calls the “rule of two.” Any important file, from family photos to music collections, should always exist in at least two places, whether that’s an external hard drive or the cloud. That way, even in rare cases of ransomware or hardware failure, customers won’t lose their most precious memories.

Great Computer Deals also offers honest advice on software. While antivirus programs have their place, Josh stresses that no software can protect against scams that rely on human error. “Antivirus is like a security system for your house,” he said. “But if you unlock the door and invite someone in, it can’t help you. The most important tool is common sense.”

Today, Great Computer Deals operates at 1190 East Highway 372, across from Pizza Hut in the plaza with Game Corner Arcade and Fun Center. Their hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with weekend or evening appointments available upon request. Customers can find them online at greatcompdeals.com or on Facebook.

For Josh Osborne, owning a business in Pahrump isn’t just about selling computers—it’s about helping people feel confident in a digital world that often feels overwhelming. “Technology can be amazing,” he said, “but it can also be confusing and even dangerous if you don’t know what to watch out for. We’re here to make sure people in this community have somewhere they can turn, where they know they’ll be treated with respect and honesty.” Fifteen years in, that commitment has made Great Computer Deals not just a store, but a trusted partner for the people of Pahrump.
