Avena & Sons Electric Building a Legacy and Lighting the Future of Pahrump

Royce Avena, founder of Avena & Sons Electric, has built more than just a business—he’s created a legacy with his family at its heart. Established in 2018, Avena & Sons Electric started as a one-man operation, with Royce taking on all the responsibilities of a new business owner. But what began as a solo endeavor quickly grew into a true family affair, with all five of his sons—Andrew, Jake, Logan, Dylan, and Matthew—joining him in the business.

Royce didn’t initially plan to start his own company again. He had owned an electric company in the past and with the down shift in the economy, sought other work. When he transitioned back into the electrical field he found work at another company. He was content working for another firm until a local builder approached him and encouraged him to take the leap into entrepreneurship. “It kind of just came up,” Royce recalls. “I had a builder contact me and ask why I wasn’t on my own.” After some thought, and encouragement from his wife, Stephanie, he decided to go for it.

In the early days, Royce’s two oldest sons, Andrew and Jake, were still in high school but played a crucial role in getting the business off the ground. “They were kind of forced into it,” Royce jokes, though both boys quickly grew into their roles. Now, they’ve been working full-time for several years, with their younger brothers, Dylan and Logan, also joining the team as they finished school. Even Matthew, still in high school, helps out on weekends and after football practice.

The core mission of Avena & Sons Electric is simple yet profound: to leave something lasting for the boys. Royce explains, “We’ve had conversations about where we want to take this company, and for us, it’s about them committing to it 100%. They want to corner the market here in Pahrump, eventually expand into Vegas, and really make this business their own.”

Avena & Sons Electric offers a wide range of electrical services, from new construction and renovations to residential and commercial work. While they’ve stayed away from solar installations due to its complexity and resource demands, they’re equipped to handle nearly any electrical need. “We do everything from changing a light bulb to installing new underground services,” Royce says.

One of the key factors that sets Avena & Sons Electric apart from its competitors is its strong family foundation. Customers often ask if Royce’s sons will be the ones on the job, reflecting a community that appreciates the generational aspect of the business. “People love that it’s a legacy,” Royce says. “They see the boys working and know that they’re getting skilled, responsible workers who care about the job they’re doing.”

Running a business as a family isn’t without its challenges, especially when it comes to balancing work and life. Royce admits that the line between the two often blurs. “There isn’t much of a work-life balance,” he says. “It’s all work, and that’s something I worry about for the boys. I don’t want them to burn out, so I try to encourage them to take time off when they can.”

Despite the demanding schedule, the boys have no regrets about joining the family business. Jake, one of the oldest, shares, “I like working with my family. It’s fun and always a competition, which just makes us all better.” Andrew, reflecting on his experience, shares, “I’m so grateful for the opportunity I was given. From a young age, we were told that if we were going to do this, we had to take it seriously. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We’re building something here that’s going to last.”

His brother Dylan adds, “It feels like I’m getting paid to go to college because I’m learning a trade and getting work experience at the same time.” And Logan, even though he only works with the family business part time, working full time for extended family, says, “My dad has blessed us beyond anything I can repay. It’s great spending time with the family and knowing that we’re building something together that’s going to last.”

Royce’s youngest, Matthew, is still weighing his options between college and the family business, but the pull of working alongside his father and brothers is strong. “I love working with my family,” he says. “But I also want to explore college. I’m still figuring it out.”

Stephanie, Royce’s wife, plays an integral role in the business as well. She handles all the scheduling, community outreach, and much of the day-to-day operations, allowing Royce and the boys to focus on the hands-on work. Royce is quick to praise her contributions, saying, “Stephanie does all the behind-the-scenes work. She organizes everything, takes care of the community aspects, and keeps us all on track. She downplays her role, but we couldn’t do this without her.”

    Stephanie and Royce Avena

Avena & Sons Electric is more than just a business—it’s a testament to hard work, family values, and the dedication of a father who wanted to give his sons a future. As Royce puts it, “The sons part is really what it’s all about. This business is theirs, and the sky’s the limit for them.”
