Karen Dallatore Takes on the Great Cycle Challenge to Fight Childhood Cancer

For the seventh year in a row, 75-year-old Pahrump resident Karen Dallatore is pedaling with purpose. She is once again participating in the nationwide Great Cycle Challenge, a month-long effort where riders across the country log miles throughout September to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

“This is not a race—it’s a challenge,” Karen explained. “Anybody can sign up, set a personal mileage goal, and fundraise to support research. It’s inspiring to know there are participants in every state all working toward the same cause.”

Karen has set herself a lofty mileage goal: 500 miles in just one month. It’s an incredible commitment, but one she has accomplished year after year since first discovering the challenge on Facebook. “It touched my heart, and I thought this was something I could do,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed bike riding, but this gave it a new purpose.”

Her fundraising target for 2025 is $500, though she’s already surpassed that. “Every year I think maybe people won’t be able to donate again, and every year they come through,” she said with a smile. Donations go directly to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, supporting treatments and breakthroughs that give children a fighting chance against cancer.

Karen rides mostly around Pahrump, sticking to safer, lower-traffic areas. “I try to avoid the highways. I like riding toward Mountain Falls and on Manse Road since it has a decent bike lane,” she said. Safety is always a priority, and she makes sure to wear reflective gear. On an average day, she covers 35–40 miles, and sometimes stretches her route to 50.

The challenge also provides encouragement through powerful reminders of why riders push forward. Participants receive photos and stories of children battling cancer. “It’s heartbreaking, but the kids are so brave,” Karen said. “They always show the bravest faces, even while going through something no child should ever have to endure.”

Her dedication has even taken her story to Times Square. In recent years, photos of Karen have appeared on the iconic New York City billboard as part of the challenge’s national promotion. “That was my 10 minutes of fame,” she joked.

Those who wish to support Karen’s effort can donate through the official challenge website at greatcyclechallenge.com/riders/KarenDallatore1. Every mile she pedals in September is another step toward a cure for childhood cancer.

“I may be riding alone, but I know I’m part of something much bigger,” Karen said. “Together, we’re making a difference.”
