The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ varsity basketball team hosted the Sports Leadership and Management of Nevada (SLAM) Bulls on Wednesday, December 11. Despite a spirited effort and solid defensive performance, the Trojans fell 49-39 in a game marked by intense plays and a rollercoaster of momentum shifts.
The game began with SLAM quickly establishing their presence, scoring back-to-back baskets to take an early lead. Keir Sheppard responded for the Trojans with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 3-4. SLAM answered with an inside jumper, and Josh Slusher kept the Trojans in the game by drawing a foul and sinking both free throws to narrow the deficit to 5-6. Alejandro Lozano electrified the crowd with a breakaway layup to tie the game at 7-7, but SLAM regained control with a series of well-executed plays, finishing the first quarter ahead 12-8.
The second quarter saw SLAM widen their lead, combining strong inside play and fast-break opportunities. Lozano fought back for the Trojans, converting a free throw and later scoring on a driving layup. Despite solid contributions from Slusher and Tramaine Burras, SLAM’s offense proved relentless, taking advantage of turnovers and missed opportunities by the Trojans to head into halftime with a 26-14 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Trojans showed renewed determination. Lozano ignited the offense with a three-pointer, and Burras followed with a critical rebound and basket to cut into SLAM’s lead. Burras and Lozano continued to connect, with Burras delivering a slick pass to Lozano for another score, narrowing the gap to 22-28. However, SLAM capitalized on their own breakaway opportunities and free throws, pulling away again. Late in the third quarter, Burras completed a three-point play after drawing a foul on an inside jumper, and Lozano hit another clutch shot from the top of the key to bring the Trojans closer at 29-36.
In the final quarter, the Trojans pushed hard to mount a comeback. Burras connected with Lozano on a fast-break play, and Jack Toth energized the crowd with a deep three-pointer, closing the gap to 35-38. Despite the Trojans’ efforts, SLAM responded with timely baskets and consistent free-throw shooting, extending their lead in the final minutes. Keir Sheppard sank two free throws late in the game to keep the Trojans within striking distance, but SLAM sealed the victory with a final inside basket, ending the game at 49-39.
After the game, Head Coach Braydon Preston reflected on the team’s performance. “Our defense is getting much better from day one. The guys played hard, especially switching to man-to-man defense, something we haven’t practiced much,” he said. While praising the defensive improvements, Preston also acknowledged the team’s struggles on offense. “If we even finished half the baskets we missed, I think we win the game,” he remarked, noting that missed free throws also played a key role in the outcome.
Preston attributed some of the offensive struggles to the mental challenges of the game. “Basketball is all a mental game as well. Tonight it was tough,” he said. Despite the loss, he expressed pride in the team’s effort and gave a special shoutout to all the players for their commitment and resilience. “We worked really hard, and the defense showed that,” he added.
Looking ahead, the Trojans will face Moapa Valley on Friday. Preston emphasized the importance of continuing to improve, staying focused, and playing hard. The game against SLAM showcased the team’s defensive growth and highlighted areas for improvement, giving the Trojans a strong foundation to build upon for the rest of the season.
