Tamara Trudeau, the visionary behind Water Rock Designs, has turned her passion for crafting into a thriving small business that reflects her creativity and love for community. What began as a hobby in 2018 and became an officially licensed business in 2021, Water Rock Designs has become a staple in the Pahrump crafting scene, offering personalized, high-quality items that capture the spirit of individuality and connection.
Before launching her business, Tamara spent over 14 years running a cake business while raising her children. And while she loved making cakes for her customers, her weekends were filled with events and custom orders leaving her “family” days occupied with work. She hung up her apron for a creative outlet that allowed for more flexibility. This shift led her to crafting, where she began with tumblers in 2018 before expanding into t-shirts, flannels, and other apparel. “The cakes were great, but I needed something less demanding on my weekends. Crafting became the perfect solution,” she explained.
Water Rock Designs officially launched at a craft show just before the COVID-19 pandemic, which presented unique challenges. From navigating supply chain shortages to establishing the legal and financial framework of her business, Tamara worked diligently to ensure she started on the right foot. “I wanted to do it legit. That meant getting my DBA, Nevada business license, setting up a business bank account, and learning how to file sales tax,” she shared. Despite these hurdles, she found reliable wholesalers and adapted to the changing landscape, building a business that reflects her commitment to quality and integrity.
Tamara’s design process is deeply personal and dynamic. She stays attuned to social trends while infusing her creations with a unique touch that resonates with her and her customers. “I try to do something different in Pahrump,” she said. “If I see a fresh idea at a show far away, I’ll bring it back but make it my own.” Her inventory includes items she personally uses and loves, ensuring a genuine connection with her customers. “I sell t-shirts I’d want to wear myself,” she added.
Tamara’s love of crafting runs deep, rooted in the inspiration and skills passed down from the women in her family. Her mother, Norma, Aunt Margaret, and Grandma Ginney played pivotal roles in sparking her creativity during her childhood. “My mom sewed my figure skating costumes and other clothing, while my aunt really cultivated my sewing skills—I still have the first fabric shears she gave me when I turned 16,” she shared. Her grandmother, Ginney, introduced her to crochet, further enriching her appreciation for handmade artistry. Today, Tamara’s husband, Don, is her biggest supporter, often helping her set up and tear down at craft shows, making her crafting adventures a true family affair.
The quality of Tamara’s work stems from her dedication to sourcing the best materials. She buys directly from the manufacturer and reputable wholesalers and oversees the creation of every item to ensure it meets her high standards. “I don’t buy seconds or discounted items. Everything comes directly from trusted suppliers, and I make each piece myself,” she emphasized.
Water Rock Designs is not just about products; it’s about people. Tamara’s love for connecting with others shines through her participation in local craft fairs and events. She is a regular at the Pahrump Fall Festival, Spooky Jingles, Heart and Hand Mother’s Day Show, and Hometown Holidays. Her passion also takes her out of state, where she participates in three Michigan craft shows annually. “I love meeting people at these events. It’s one of my favorite parts of the business,” she said.
The crafting community has played a significant role in Tamara’s success. Her first craft show was the Heart and Hand Mother’s Day Show, organized by Randi Case, who encouraged her to showcase her work. Since then, she’s developed a strong partnership with Ashley Welch, another local crafter. “Ashley is my number one person to bounce ideas off. We collaborate a lot, whether it’s at shows or behind the scenes,” Tamara said.
While she doesn’t have a singular favorite project, Tamara treasures her first creations, such as her initial epoxy glitter tumbler and hand-sewn flannel. These items symbolize her growth and dedication as a crafter. Looking ahead, she plans to expand her upcycling and add more to her repertoire, though she prefers to let her business evolve naturally. “I just want to keep being consistent—in product, placement, and attitude—and keep enjoying what I do,” she shared.
For those starting in crafting, Tamara offers practical and inspiring advice. “Don’t let others define what you should do. Put your own spin on everything and go through the proper channels if you want to run a business,” she advised. Her emphasis on professionalism underscores her belief that treating crafting as a legitimate enterprise is key to long-term success.

Water Rock Designs is more than a business—it’s a reflection of Tamara’s creative spirit, dedication to quality, and passion for building connections. With her ever-evolving ideas and commitment to her craft, Tamara continues to leave a lasting impression on her community and beyond.
